just to make sure, external DHCP is impossible without VLANs, correct? 

 

I was wondering if I could use my old router as DHCP server, but I dont want to use VLANs because I dont have any managable switch.

I think it would work...  you would use a default vlan, for everything... which is in effect no using a vlan.
