Model: EAP660 HD
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.0 Build 20211027 Rel. 35153(4555)

Hi,

I bought a 4x4 access point so i could use it with more than one 2x2 client at a time. One client (Intel AX200) gets a maximum of 800 Mbit/s. That's good. However, when I use two clients at a time I never get higher than 800 Mbit/s with the two clients combined. They both drop to about 400 Mbit/s or lower.

I read a review (at hwp.media) about the access point and they write:

"When connected simultaneously at 5 GHz, the speed between clients floated in the range of 400-430 Mbit/s, giving a total result of 840-880 Mbit/s. Since the connection was symmetric (2x2 + 2x2), the performance towards Uplink and Downlink did not differ. We turned to TP-Link for clarification, and we were informed that Yes, today there are difficulties with the distribution of clients between spatial streams in the 5 GHz band, and this error will be corrected literally in the next firmware version, which will allow us to see real speeds of 1.6-1.7 Gbit/s."

Has this problem been fixed? Does anyone get more than 800 MBit/s with two 2x2 clients?

Best regards,
Kurzweil

No it hasn't get that update yet. The current firmware is for adding Mesh function, so we still need to wait for the next

Interesting,

I'll have to try and test this when I get home today.  I've not initiated multiple DL/UL speed tests on multuple clients simultaneously.  My broad band is only 1 Gbit (FIOS) anyway.  And I typically use internet speed tests (FAST.com, Ookla, and SpeedSmart) for testing, and it can be difficult at times to get even ~600-700 Mbit/sec with a single cleint (though to be fair there are ~30 ish other "idle" STA's on this AP at the same time.  I could use iPerf, but, generally speaking, don't.

The December 12th or so EAP660HD gives the option to enable OFDMA which I have and am using.  I have two 660's at home, and two more at work.  All work well and have great range.

But, realistic, per client (one at a time) 2x2 speeds are on the order of 300-600 Mbit usually.  Best case 600-700. (Wifi 6, iPhone 13 Pro Max).

I may be wrong, but I would think that "load balancing" across the 4x4 antenna's on the EAP with multiple 2x2 STA's would be a function of MU-MIMO, no?  Perhaps requiring both DL MU-MIMO and UL-MIMO (for the ACK's)?

Generally speaking MU-MIMO seems to be garbage / very buggy / over hyped and requires both AP AND Client/STA support.

Still, very happy with my 660HD's.  Speeds are nearly double what I typically saw on my EAP245 V3's, and range is much better.  AT least 1.5x better, maybe 2x.  I actually decomissioned my two EAP225-OD's because the coverage and speeds from my indoor 660's (in my yard) was better than my outdoor units (which were MESH uplinked).

At work, I have two 660's on the 4th floor.  I actually get very usable 5 Ghz, Wifi 6, 80MHz signal on the 3rd floor below them through an 18" thick concrete and rebar slab (plus linoleium, piping, drop ceiling grid, metal framing / studs / etc.) -- AMAZING!

On a related note. What's your uplink connection? 1 Gbit/s or 2.5 Gbit/s? Mine are only on Gigabit, so they'll cap out at ~950 Mbit/s or so anyway.

  @JSchnee21

My connection is currently 1Gbps and with two clients it does not exceed 800 Mbps so that connection is not the limiting factor right now.

Smallnetbuilder has a throughput test called "How Much Total Throughput Can Your Wi-Fi Router Really Provide?"
The RT-AX86U (4x4 configuration) has a throughput of around 1200 Mbps with two clients connected. Then when more clients connect it drops down to around 950.
