So I ran into something today. Quite interesting.. I actually have both TL-SG3428 and TL-SG3428MP

 

While I was setting up the TL-SG3428MP, I bought some 10Gtek SFP to RJ45 converter. I plugged one into port 28, and used it as my uplink port. I powered it on and viola.. Worked like a charm..

Powered it off.

 

I plugged another into port 27 and used it to connect my EAP. Powered it on, and it works! 

 

I plugged another into Port 25 and was planning on connecting a NAS to the unit. Powered it on only to have the unit sit there for 3 minutes and never booted.

 

So I said to myself.. What's seems to be the problem here..

 

I remove all SFP converters and start with SFP port 25 and plug one in. Power it on and once again.. It will not boot. 

I power it off and put it in SFP port 26 and power it on and it will fully boot.. 

 

So I power it down of course, remove the SFP converter from port 26 and put it in port 27. Power it on and it will fully boot..

 

Power it down again and remove the SFP converter from port 27 and place it in SFP port 28.. Power it on and it will fully boot.. 

 

What gives here? So I think to myself maybe I had something wrong here and remove the SFP converter from port 28 and place it back in SFP port 25..

 

Power it on........... It WILL NOT boot! 

 

So is my switch defective? 

 

So, I tell myself, let's test it in TL-SG3428 (the NON-POE switch)

 

I do ALL the exact same procedure as above and once again I find that IT WILL NOT BOOT with the converter in SFP port 25.....

 

This beats all I've seen.. 

 

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or why they will not boot with a converter in SFP port 25?....???

Just thought I would share my updates with everyone.

 

The issue was the 10Gtek SFP converters that I purchsed. 

Here are the ones I purchased on Amazon.

 

Here are the official TP-Link ones on Amazon.

 

In the end, the 10Gtek are not fully compatiable with TP-Link. I will be post a review of this on Amazon. 

 

I got the new TP-Link converters and if I power off the switch and power it back on, it will boot normal.

  @cbharis Just out of curiosity: why are you rebooting the switch before plugging/unpluggning the SFP? SFPs are hot-plug by design.

Could it be a setting for port 25 that get confused with a copper SFP? Not sure what it would be, but I think TP-Link's official standpoint is that their switches do not support copper SFPs, at least for the SG2210MP I have.

  @cbharis 

Can you share the model with us? It could be helpful for the support team to look into this. I searched from the guide and datasheet and I cannot tell why this would happen.

 

BTW, is there any log tells you the port is not working? Any errors? Try the console: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/291/

While you are connected to the console, the switch is off, the module is in, then boot the switch, will the PC shows errors?

It doesn't matter which model I am in, they both do the same thing. I thought it was just specific to the "MP" model I just received but they both do the same thing after testing.
