Feature request: DNS resolution for local clients
The intention of this thread is to understand whether local DNS resolution is on the roadmap, and if not, to define a suggestion for such a feature and gather inputs from other users in hope to get it implemented.
As a user, I would like my router's DNS server to resolve the hostnames of local clients so that I can connect to them by name instead of IP.
It is hard to remember IP addresses, and we already have the possibility of remembering clients and assigning them names in Omada Controller. Having to run a separate DNS server and duplicate the name/IPs would be cumbersome and error prone. Integrating resolution of names as configured in Omada Controller in the router's DNS server would be a much smoother option.
Names of clients should be added to the DNS server in priority order:
1. If any client is given a name in Omada Controller, that name should be used as hostname (after potential removal/replacement of incompatible characters)
2. (Optional) The hostname a client reports during DHCP request
As far as I know, this is a common feature in commercial routers. Ubiquiti also supports this, google "ubiquity dnsmasq" (link was not allowed).
TP-link, please reply whether this is on the roadmap or if you can consider implementing it.
