  I am wondering what to do with this TL-SG3424P switch. Fans were running when taken out of service earlier this year and recently found another use for the switch, but now see that the fans are not running. The power jack for each fan does not supply the 12v needed, but only measures around 3v.

 

  We are not planning on using more than 4-5 POE devices with this switch, so I wonder if we can use it as a fanless unit? The switch seems to work in simple testing. GUI is available.

 

  If the switch self-destructs, we would be fine with that, but could this overheat with <6 POE devices and cause problems external to the switch?

 

  Easy answer is to send to recyclers, but would be nice if still somewhat usable. Any opinions?

It may actually just take some time to warm up enough to need the fans....  I'd running it with 20-30W of POE load for 30min...either fans kick in, or the lights go out.  You'll have your answer.

Thanks. I only had 15w of load available and ran for a few hours. Fans did not come on and the port bank heatsink used did warm up and power supply capacitors were warm enough that I think the fans should have come on. I'll look into a alternate power source for the fans. I was more worried about devices plugged into this switch affected if the switch ultimately fails. Still don't know why the fans don't work as before. Thanks.

Doesn't that switch do up to 320W of POE power?  I don't think 15W is enough to push the internal circuitry with its inherent passive cooling ability past it's point of needing forced air cooling.

  Yeah, thanks. I can understand the low load not really testing the unit's ability, but if my memory is working (somewhat), I thought those fans ran before at all times. Maybe they ran up during boot for a few minutes and then backed off until they're needed. But they haven't ran at all lately - during boot up or not.

Agree...all indicators point to those fans firing up on boot.  If you have an old 12V wall wart in your junk box, you could probably direct wire that to the fans.  If you wanted to get cutesie about it, you could drop $13 on TPlinks POE to 12V DC adapter and use the switch to power the fans itself :)

This would have the added benefit of allowing you to optionally power those fans at 9V to reduce their noise if you aren't fully loading the switch.

Hey, I didn't know that type of adapter was available. I'll have to keep that in mind. I do have an extra wall wart and I also located a 12v pin within the switch coming off of the power supply, so I may just tap into that.
