I set up a client to LAN VPN connection from m house to the non-profit I help.
I am able to use remote desktop and remote manage the router but I am unable to map network drives on the LAN side from my home (client) PC.
I am using Windows 7 on both sides.
Any suggestions?

IPSec? PPTP? L2TP over IPSec? To properly map network drives that rely on netBIOS protocol, always use a local DHCP server that supports netBIOS or use a WINS server.
Lastly, enable netBIOS over Tcpip for each client.
