Model: EAP670
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.1.1

EAP670 spontaneously goes into adoption mode every few days. It was working fine for 6 months or so but then started having problems. There is nothing in the logs. See attached photos. How can I troubleshoot this?

Swapping and replacing cables will be most difficult, so I would like to get to the bottom of it before I pay to have someone get to it since I cannot get to it.

Hi  @Dr_Marty

Thanks for posting here.

Here I want to confirm more details about the situation:

1. When the EAP displaying as Adopting, is the Internet affected?

2. From the topology, there is another EAP meshed to the Master Bed EAP, and when it display as adopting, the mesh EAP Lounge still shows as Connected, how about its Internet access? Is it affected?

3. You mentioned that it was working correctly for 6 month, is there any difference recently? for example, was there any new device added into the network? Or did you change any settings?

4. You mentioned the EAP will reconnect after a reset. What do you mean by reset? Is that mean power off and power on (reboot)? Or factory reset it? if factory reset, how did you do that when can't touch it?

@Vincent-TP thank you for getting back to me. Let me answer the questions in turn.

1. When the EAP displaying as Adopting, is the Internet affected?

The internet is not affected with two exceptions. First, wireless clients inside the house connect to another AP, either Office or Attic. Second, the Lounge AP is isolated for a few minutes before it can connect to Attic. During the time that Lounge is isolated, wireless clients inside the lounge generally cannot connect to the internet.

2. From the topology, there is another EAP meshed to the Master Bed EAP, and when it display as adopting, the mesh EAP Lounge still shows as Connected, how about its Internet access? Is it affected?

When the Master Bedroom AP gets in one of those moods (I don't know how else to describe it), the Lounge AP is unavailable until it attaches to the Attic AP.,

3. You mentioned that it was working correctly for 6 month, is there any difference recently? for example, was there any new device added into the network? Or did you change any settings?

I installed these in the fall of 2024, so maybe 9 months ago. Initially, I had a cheap PoE switch that drove all three wired APs. This issue started about two months ago. Earlier this month, I replaced the cheap switch with the SG3210XHP-M2 in the topology. Since replacing the switch, the problem has only happened twice, or about once per week. With the old switch, this problem happened every few days.

To your question: short of stable firmware upgrades and replacing the cheap switch, nothing has changed until last night (noted at the end of this comment).

4. You mentioned the EAP will reconnect after a reset. What do you mean by reset? Is that mean power off and power on (reboot)? Or factory reset it? if factory reset, how did you do that when can't touch it?]

When I had the cheap PoE switch, I would physically remove the ethernet cable from the switch in order to power-cycle the AP. Now that I have a SG3210XHP-M2, I have learned the the PoE Recovery option on the port in the app will do the same thing without me having to be physically at the switch.

Since posting the original message, I have upgraded this problematic AP to the beta firmware 1.3.0 Build 20250609 Rel. 35129.

Thank you again. Please feel free to give any guidance as to how to troubleshoot the issue.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marty Scholes

  @Dr_Marty

Thank you for the detailed reply.

Based on your description, I suspect this is a physical link issue with the Master Bedroom AP.

Typically, this could be caused by the connected Ethernet cable, the switch port, or the EAP itself.

I'm afraid you'll need to conduct on-site troubleshooting.

Here's what you may try:

Try swapping this EAP with another EAP unit to see if the problem moves with the device (bad EAP) or stays in place (bad cable/port)

@Vincent-TP This is in the attic and it has been rather hot here. I am starting to convince myself that I have been cooking this AP. It struggles the most during the heat of the day and is mostly OK overnight. I have ordered a cat6 cable and EAP772-Outdoor unit to replace the EAP670. I understand that the EAP772-Outdoor does not require airflow and will be able to handle the attic temperature which I understand stays below 55 C.

Hi  @Dr_Marty

Thanks for the reply.

The hot, stuffy, and poorly ventilated environment can indeed affect performance. However, you previously mentioned that the stucking at adopting AP was the Master Bedroom AP, not the attic. Or is the attic AP also experiencing issues now?

@Vincent-TP Thank you for following up. The short version is that all three wired APs are in the attic. My house is basically shaped like the letter L with one AP at either end and one AP in the corner above the master bedroom. I placed them there to check coverage with the intent of putting them on the ceiling below. My wife promptly notified me that she did not want "flying saucers on the ceiling" across our house, so I left them in the attic. The other two are in the path of the attic fan airflow while the failing AP in the corner sees no airflow.

Hi  @Dr_Marty

I see.

Let's see if the EAP772-outdoor and the new cables help. Looking forward to your update. smiley
