EAP610 not working with pfsense bridge interface

Friday
Model: EAP610
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.6.0

My pfsense (v2.7.2) has a bridge interface BRIDGE0 with members VLAN20 interface (igb1.20) and a second default LAN interface igb2.  The EAP610 (with an OC200 controller) has an SSID 'test20' for VLAN20.

My iPhone takes a minute to join the network.  When it eventually 'connected' (with a tick), it can only ping devices in the local subnet but not the gateway and has no internet access.  A PC in that subnet can ping my iPhone.

I have done the following two things:

  1. Disconnect the EAP610 and then adopt an EAP620HD and also later an old EAP115. Both EAP620HD and EAP115 just work.  No configuration changes in omada WLAN config nor pfsense config at all.
  2. On pfsense, create a separate VLAN10 interface (igb1.10) by itself (not a member of a bridge interface) and change the SSID VLAN ID from 20 to 10, the EAP610 would then work in this set up.

By the way, this EAP610 is shown as EAP610(EU) v3.0 on the omada controller.  I have tried firmware 1.4.3, 1.4.4 and 1.5.0 but same results for all.

Hi  @NBAus

Thanks for posting here.

To better understand the situation, please kindly give us the following info:

1. Apart from the mentioned EAP products, is there any other SDN devices adopted? Please share with us the topology of the network;

2. Your only mentioned your iPhone. Have you tested with other devices? Do all devices exhibit the same behavior—able to connect to SSID, obtain IP, access local network, but cannot access the internet? Or this only related to the iPhone?

3. Please share with us the config of the bridge interface VLAN20 and the VLAN10, we want to compare their difference;

4. Disconnect the EAP610 and then adopt an EAP620HD and also later an old EAP115. Both EAP620HD and EAP115 just work.  No configuration changes in omada WLAN config nor pfsense config at all.

>>>Did you plug the EAP620 HD and the EAP115 into the same port as the EAP610? What's the VLAN config of the uplink port?

1. I can reproduce the issues in our lab so the tests are carried out with minimal equipment and no other EAP devices

internet ---- (WAN, igb0) - pfsense - (LAN, igb01) --- POE Switch (TL-SG108PE) --- EAP610/EAP620HD/EAP115

                                             |

                                        (OPT1, igb02) - Windows PC for ping tests

2. Tried iPhone, iPad, Android phone and Windows laptop.  Same issues.

3. pfsense interfaces:

  • WAN (igb0)
  • LAN (igb1)
  • WIFI10 (igb1.10)  - VLAN10 on the LAN interface
  • WIFI20 (igb1.20)  - VLAN20 on the LAN interface
  • OPT1 (igb2)
  • BRIDGE0 (bridge interface with members igb1.20 and igb2)

Three subnets on LAN, WIFI10 and BRIDGE0.  No subnets for WIFI20 and OPT1 since they are just members of the BRIDGE0 interface.
SSID1: 'Test10' with VLAN ID 10

SSID2: 'Test20' with VLAN ID 20

Therefore the difference is that VLAN10 is on WIFI10 VLAN interface by itself while VLAN20 is on WIFI20 VLAN interface which is a member of a bridge interface.

4. For all the tests, a single EAP access point is used at any one time.  Yes, on the same port with the same cable.  The POE switch is out of the box with default settings.
