Model: EAP660 HD
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.4.3

Hello Everyone,

Its my first post in the forum. I am a network administrator in an Educational Institute. I have 10 Omada switches and 3 Omada EAP660HD. I run a Omada Controller in a Linux Server. The problem I am facing is very unique I think, its about EAP660HD, Hardware Version US 2.0 and from my experience, I am quite sure It's hardware or firmware issue.

One of the three EAP660HD Hardware Version US 1.0 and two are EAP660HD Hardware Version US 2.0. I have created few Wireless Profiles in the Omada Controller, Hardware version US 1.0 is work fine on everything but EAP660HD Hardware Version US 2.0 are not backward compatible with WiFi version 4 and WiFi version 5 devices on 5GHz. 2.4 GHz works on everything. I have tested it many WiFi version 4, 5 & 6 devices including Android Mobile and Laptops.

I reset the AP to factory default, Put one AP under the controller and other in standalone mode, changed 20MHz and 40MHz DFS and Non-DFS channel, put mode in Auto, manual everything, used all Mixed modes supported by the AP but none worked with Older Wifi 4 and 5 devices on 5GHz band, it only works on newer Wifi 6 devices. I mailed the complain to TP-Link support but they have not answered it yet. I thought some of you guys might have the same problem and might know any bypass solution unless TP-Link provide me any solution.

It would be a great help if anyone can guide me how to solve the issue. I was testing these devices before i deploy another 15 devices in the institute. If I am unable to get the newer version of devices work with older devices, I might stop the new purchase or buy only  Hardware version US 1.0, which is known workable device for me.

Thanks in advance

Lintush

Hello @Hank21

I came back to office, checked everything and found that it was all along a simple configuration issue. The EAP660 HD(US) v2.0 5GHz only works fine with 5GHz 802.11a/n/ac mixed mode with older devices. Putting the Radio in Auto or 802.11a/n/ac/ax mixed hides the SSID for older WiFi version 4 and WiFi version 5. But interestingly, it did not happen to The EAP660 HD(US) v1.0. So now I am using 802.11a/n/ac mixed mode to test if everyone sees the SSID in 5GHz. It will take 3 more days to Students come to the institute and see the performance. I am using 40MHz Channelwidth with manual setting to avoid interference.

Thanks for you support and waiting for a patch come from TP-Link, so that I can use the 802.11a/n/ac/ax mixed mode, which will increase performance.

Hi  @Lintush

Did you try to use an open WiFi for EAP660HD V2(US) and check the connection with your WiFi 4&5 devices when using 5G SSID?

If this issue still persists, we would like to follow it up via email later. If possible, can you provide the contact ID of your email to TP-Link support for us?

  Dear @Hank21

Thanks for your prompt reply, i was out of office, so took the time to come back and check.

Your suggestion worked, I was able to see 5GHz SSID with older device when used the Open Password and browse Internet.

Now what to do? I do not want to keep the password open, please suggest me the next step.

Thanks in advance.

Hi  @Lintush

Could you please help me confirm the specific symptoms? Is it that you can't see the SSID, can see it but can't connect, or can connect but can't obtain an IP address? If you can't see it, it might be that the device is operating on a channel that the client doesn't support?

So you could try adjusting the channel to Band 1, 2, 3, or 4. Also, please check the configured wireless mode: b/g/n/ax?

It would be appreciated if you could provide any configuration screenshots for our reference.

Re:EAP660 HD(US) v2.0 5GHz backward combability issue with WiFi version 4 and WiFi version 5

 Hello @Hank21

Lets be clear one thing, it is not like that I can see 5GHz SSID in older Wifi Version 4 and Wifi Version 5 but can't connect, I can't see them, they are not visible. It only became visible to older devices as I used Open Password, using WPA2 password makes the SSID invisible. The SSID are there, it can only be seen from new Wifi 6 version Laptop and Mobile phones. I used 20MHz and 40MHz channelwidth on 5GHz SSID on channel 36, 40, 44 etc but result does not change, used DFS and Non-DFS channel, used both to test if it is an issue. I did it several times to make sure that I am not making a mistake. I also changed mode of configured wireless mode: b/g/n/ax all settings one by one to see if any of them works but they just don't. I feel like a fool but it's the truth. It seems it should work but it does not. Currently I am unable to provide screenshoot, I can send them next week, its a Eid Vacation,

Thanks for your effort, I will provide all necessary document you required to solve the problem. This is the issue only associated with EAP660 HD(US) v2.0, EAP660 HD(US) v1.0 works fine on everything. My email for the Omada Controller and the TP-Link support is the same one, its metroliton@gmail.com, if you can see them from your end. If you want, I can create an admin account for you in the controller, so you can see the setting in real time. Let me know, you can communicate with me in the same e-mail address if required.

Thanks in advance.
