ER6120 VPN between iphone and router with internet access

I am trying to set up a VPN between my iPhone and ER6120, I have managed to upgrade the firmware of the ER6120 with the iPhone patch and can now get the iPhone to talk to my LAN. But while the iPhone is on the VPN, the internet side of the phone will not work. I think it might have something to do with the DNS as I can ping things like google, although internet based apps will not work. I want to get the phone to use the home broadband so I can watch things like BBC iplayer when abroad. Just about exhausted the internet now trying to find a solution to this problem. I do not want to use a 3rd party VPN, but set up my own!
