Hi everyone,

 

I'm looking at the TL-SG105E/TL-SG108E switches and wondering if they're appropriate for my situation.

 

On my ISP's device, there are 4 LAN ports - 2 are for the ordinary LAN (Internet) and 2 of them are for the IPTV service they bundle. They did run a Cat5 cable to another room when installing the IPTV, but the trouble is that I can only have 1 service active on the cable at the same time, depending on which port on the ISP device I plug the cable into.

 

My question is, can I use a pair of these switches and their VLAN features to create a setup like so:

  • On the first switch, the LAN cable and the IPTV cable are plugged in to ports 2 and 3. Port 1 should act as a trunk port and will have the single cable running to the other room plugged into it.
  • On the second switch, the other end of the trunk cable is plugged in to port 1. In case of the TL-SG108E, ports 2-6 would be used for LAN, while 7-8 would be used for IPTV.

 

Has anyone been able to achieve a similar setup with these devices? Any feedback would be appreciated.

You can use VLAN feature to isolate the IPTV data and Internet data. But your demand is that make IPTV and Internet can work at the same time?

Why not just connect a switch to the port of ISP's device that used for IPTV, and connect another switch to the port of ISP's device that used for Internet.

Hi Andone, Thanks for your reply! The reason is that I don’t want to run a second cat5 cable and drill into the concrete.

Place one switch to the router, connect two patch cables between switch an two different ports (one IPTV, one LAN). Assign the two ports to different VLANs each.

 

Connect a second switch to the first one over one cable, assign the ports to both VLANs and separate the two VLANs at the second switch to single ports again.

 

This way you carry two networks over one cable. You can use two TL-SG108E or two TL-SG105E or a TL-SG108E and a TL-SG105E for this topology.
