Model: CPE510
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version:

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if I can use EAP225 outdoor as AP with a 19dbi 90 degree sector antenna for mi wisp because tplink is not selling WBS510 any  more, actualy I have 950 customers with wbs510 on different communication towers, CPE510  and tl-wr840n on client side, and everything administrated with Mikrotiks ccr1036, I need a solution, a replacement for wbs510 because if an aelectric storm damage a wbs510 base station, tplink dont want to sell this product any more, someones tells me that I can use cpe510 as AP but the coverage is very less, and if I use 2 or 3 cpe510 to coverage an area that I can cover with a sector antenna, 3cpes uses much more part of precious spectre than 1 AP, I need to leave space on spectre on my tower for my backhaul links, I was wondering to use EAP225 with sector antenna as an replacement for wbs510, turning off maxtream on cpes510 and using the air time fairness on eap225, some people of tplink tellme that I can use UBIQUITI as AP (are you kidding me?, tplink telling me to use another brand instead looking for a solution for his customers?) give me a break!

If I use ubiquiti, I cant use the tdma protocol because is not compatible.

Now Im understanding some comments of another users that tell me that I would never have begun my wisp using tplink,

if ubiquiti discontinuates some product they have inmediately a replacement to keep protected to his customers but I dont see this on tplink.

what is the actual status of tl-ant5819ms antenna?

what is the actual status of wbs510 base station?

Hope  you can help me to find some AP to control my cpe510 of my customers and expecting to no downgrade my service using products without tdma protocol, some people recommends me ALTAI acces points, another recommends me to use EAP225 with sector antenna but Im not sure if this will work.

thanks for your time.

Hi @Stratobiter,

I'm not sure I can answer your questions.  But I do see that Amazon (in the USA) has the WBS510 available.

TP-Link WBS510 OUTDOOR BASIS STATION WLAN 300MBIT/S QUALCOMM CHIPSE, WBS510 (WLAN 300MBIT/S QUALCOMM CHIPSE)
Price:    $185.64
WBS510

If you try going with the CPE510 with the Sector antenna, I don't think you need to / should enable airtime fairness.  Airtime fairness is only used when there is a mix of old/slow wireless clients (or IoT devices) together with new faster clients.  I think you said you have only 3 downlink clients -- each of which is a CPE510 (aka 802.11ac)

I'm not sure what you mean by "3cpes uses much more part of precious spectre than 1 AP"  Are you saying this takes up too much physical space on the mast/pole?  Better each CPE510 should have it's own pole/mounting faciling the donwlink CPE510.

Or are you referring to RF spectrum?  Probably not relevent here given the highly directional antennas.

In the U.S. both are listed as EOL already:

https://www.tp-link.com/us/business-networking/outdoor-radio/wbs510/

https://www.tp-link.com/en/business-networking/antenna-and-accessory/tl-ant5819ms/

However, from FCC documents I see a CPE710 in the pipeline: https://fccid.io/TE7CPE710

I can't tell you whether there will be a corresponding WBS, too, but I fear: no. Otherwise the sector antenna would not be discontinued.

Beware of buying WBS on the grey market, you might end up with a device not allowed in your region (beside the ridiculous price in the ~185 USD price range).

I wil try to find out more about the Pharos line, since we use it for directional links, too.

An alternative to WBS might be EAP225-Outdoor with TL-ANT5819MS (it can be directly mounted to it), but TP-Link did not recommend to use it despite the fact that they once advertised EAP225-Outdoor being compatible with Pharos sector and omni antennas.

However, as a last resort I would test an EAP225-Outdoor with TL-ANT5819MS. Just make sure the 2.4 GHz radio is disabled and Tx power of the 5 GHz radio is reduced to meet the limits of the EIRP allowed in your country when using a 19 dBi sector antenna. But keep in mind that EAPs are not offering the full functionality of a Pharos device (EAPs have no different operation modes, no routing functions, no firewall etc.).

@JSchnee21

3CPE as AP occupy 3 times more spectre (120mhz) instead 40mhz of 1 ap , since we have only 5.15- 5.85 mhz of spectre (700mhz)

Thanks I will try EAP225 with sector antenna and the routing functions and firewall will be made with mi MIKROTIK. I will share my experiences with this combination, I think I will miss the test mode option and the spectrum analyzer... Regards!

Ok, I understand what you are saying. But I don't really agree. In theory Each of the CPE pairs could use the same frequency as they are directional links.

Now in practice, even with directional antennas there is some off axis RF leakage. You'd have to test this.

But certainly if the CPE links were on different sides of the building, for example, there is no reason why they could not all use the same channel. RF overlap only matters when the signals are close enough / strong enough to cause interference.

@Stratobiter

it would be great if Tplink commercialized this product in America:

TL-BS520

On a wisp tower RF noise matters and its very important to prevent overlapping. Iam developping an RF armour like this for cpe510:

Stratobiter, I spoke with my contact at TP-Link. WBS are near EOL. In some countries (EU) there are still few devices on stock, available on request from the official TP-Link distributors (see your local TP-Link website to find out the distributors). Maybe you want to ask your local distributors whether they have few WBS for the region you are in.
