Team,

When starting a VPN (i.e. OpenVPN), the client receives the IP of the router as DNS-server (together with 8.8.8.8 being the DNS from Google).

This varies if there are multiple vlans involved.

Is there a way to use the same DNS-server(s) as configured for the given vlan?

And uf multiple vlans: use the DNS-server of the management vlan?

Both are specificied in the server-OpenVPN-config?

With kind regards - Will

  @ITV

As far as I know, OpenVPN does not support global mode (proxy internet access), meaning that you assigning a DNS may not help.
And even though L2TP can customize the DNS assigned to the client, the router is only a proxy and not a DNS Server.

Just striving to develop myself while helping others.

  @Virgo

Sorry for the dealyed response - was pretty busy the last couple of weeks/days.

2 questions:

(1) - If assigning a DNS-server will not work, why assigning the IP address of the gateway? Combined with one of the Google-DNS-servers? What are the ideas behind this - especially the Google-DNS?

(2) - I assigned a DNS-server manualy to the interface on the enduser device attached to the OpenVPN client.

After which everything was working as expected:

- Local DNS-resolving

- Internet access via the local DNS-server (with forwarding to a NextDNS firewall)

So it does help. The question is now:

what does it take to make this a parameter in the Omada-OpenVPN-config (if at all possible)?

Kind regards - Will
