Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.1

I have an ER605 switch configured for load balancing WAN and WAN/LAN1 with internal IP address 192.168.0.1 assigned as a gateway.

The switch's DHCP server is assigning static IP addresses to two local LAN devices:

UDM Pro 192.168.0.2

Omada Controller running on RPI4 with 192.168.0.3.

All ports from WAN and WAN/LAN1 are forwarded to UDM Pro. (don't know if this matters)

On occasion, I notice that the WAN port connection to my ISP will drop, auto assigns itself an IP (192.168.100.11) and stays that way even after reboot/disconnecting-connecting via the controller remotely.

Unless I force reset cable modem leading to the WAN it never gets reassigned to a public facing IP address as it should.

Is there something special about 192.168.100.11? Why is it assigning itself that IP address?

Hey folks,

Just wanted to report back in case others ran into this or a similar issue. It has been several days since this issue has occurred. This leads me to believe that the problem rested with the cable modem and not with the ER605 v1. So to others who have this issue, consider replacing your modem.

  @Seren

Is the cable modem you mention a pure modem?
What is the specific WAN port connection type, is it Dynamic?
If so, it has more to do with the device on the front end, suggest contacting your ISP to confirm.
Or is there another DHCP Server in front of ER605?

Just striving to develop myself while helping others.

@Virgo Thanks for replying. See below for my answers

Is the cable modem you mention a pure modem?

No. It is a combination modem/router. However, it is in bridge mode. (this is the same for WAN/LAN1 btw)

What is the specific WAN port connection type, is it Dynamic?

Yes it is dynamic. It gets assigned an IP address, gateway, dns etc.. via my ISP's DHCP server.

If so, it has more to do with the device on the front end, suggest contacting your ISP to confirm.

I figured as much. So yesterday, I called up my ISP and they confirmed that I have been having intermitent connections. They suggested replacing the modem/router with a new unit.  However, when I went to replace my modem/router, they have apparently started the practice of handing out two devices: a modem and a router. I declined the router of course and now using my ISP's modem. I hope that this will solve the issue. In either case, I will report back in a week's time.

Or is there another DHCP Server in front of ER605?

Outside of the ER605 internal DHCP server for servicing the LAN, there are no DHCP server between ER605 and the WAN & WAN/LAN1 interfaces (as stated above, both modem/routers are in bridge mode).

All said and done, is there a significance to the specific 192.168.100.11 ip address? The assignment is consistent on that.

So quick question... is your WANs coming from two separate Internet connections? Or are you trying to load balance from the same ISP? For example, some cable modems have 2 network ports on them. Are you using both in the ER605? The 192.168.100.11 looks like a CPE address. That a modem would hand out if you exceeded the ISP CPE address allowance. Some ISP's give you like 1,2, or 3 CPE IPs. Some give you unlimited.

@KimcheeGUN The WAN and WAN/LAN1 are coming from two separate internat connections. Meaning, each port is connected to its own cable modem. However, both connections are provisioned by the same provider. So yes, I am load balancing from the same provider but via two different lines. Interestingly enough, the IP assigned to both lines are from an entirely different top level subnet.
Thank you for elucidating the significance of the 192.168.100.11 IP address. Since replacing the cable modem from my provider, I have not experience the same issue as described.
