Model: TL-R470T+
Hardware Version: V6
Firmware Version: 6.0.4 Build 20200313 Rel.32850

Router is configured with 2 WAN ports.

WAN1 is main ISP.

WAN2 is configured only for backup, when main ISP is down. It is a manually-connect-on-demand ISP service.

This means when main ISP (WAN1) is down, traffic is routed through WAN2, but actual connection to backup ISP is activated manually. Hence there is no continuous service with WAN2, only on demand.

Symptom: In this configuration connectivity to outside world through WAN1 was really slow.

Diagnostic:

- pinging to router from LAN has normal reply times and no packet loss.

- pinging to outside world from LAN has ~40% packet loss.

- pinging to outside world from router's diagnostic page has normal reply times and no packet loss.

Temporary solution: deactivate load balancing (WAN2 as backup). Service is normal now.

I believe there is an issue with the load balancing configuration. The routing table has equal priority for both WAN ports, but WAN port 2 can route traffic to internet only when ISP is manually activated.

I believe the router is sending packets to both WANs alternatively, and hence the packets on WAN2 are getting lost.

This is not how it is supposed to work.

WAN1 should get higher priority in routing table, and WAN2 should only be used on WAN1 failure, according to configuration.

As a workaround can I manually set the priority in the routing table if I overwrite the routes to outside world with WAN2 in Static Routing?

Kind regards

  @Somnius80

I don't have R470T+ but I'm using ER605 router.

For my router if I setup link backup, the backup WAN will just inactive and all data traffic can only go to primary WAN.

I think you may try to upgrade the firmware, or check Online detection settings. For example if your primary WAN is unstable (according to online detection result), the router will keeps going to backup WAN and then switch back to primary WAN in a loop.
