Omada setup with router, switch and controller
Hi!
I recently moved to a new house, that is an older house from 1960s. This house has never had any wirings for network, so I have now a great opportunity to build a solid base for networking. I have a 5G modem from the internet operator and my idea was to add router, switch and a controller from TP-Link to this setup. And I did so, I purchased:
- ER707-M2 for the router
- SG2218P for the switch
- OC300 for the hardware controller
I'm not that experienced with these level devices, and I would like to have some help. I tried to search the forums and I have also been googling quite a lot, but I can't find any good starting point for this kind of setup. My assumptions were, that this would work:
- connect the ethernet cable from the 5G modem to the router's WAN port
- connect a cable from the router to the switch
- connect a cable from switch to the controller
I thought, that with this setup the router gets the IP, and then switch gets the connection from the router and can distribute that to any device connected to it (for now, the controller). But this ain't the case, it is just not working. But if I connect my laptop directly to the router, it can obtain an IP address from the router and I can browse the internet. So the connection is working. I don't just get the other parts how to get them working.
Few questions:
1. Very basic for the starters: if I've understood correctly, the hardware controller is there to control everything, right? So it can be used to manage the router and switch?
2. How to start managing the controller, I mean how to access it's web interface? Does it obtain an IP address with my cabling explained above, or how should it be? For example I cannot connect to the Internet with my laptop if the laptop's ethernet cable is connected to the switch. It only works if the cable is connected directly to the router. So I guess the switch is not distributing the router's DHCP to the devices connected to the switch.
I don't know actually how to ask more questions, because I'm so confused right now. Mayeb this is something really simple, but I don't just get it now. I would like to have someone pointing me straighforward instructions, how and what to connect to where and where to start managing. I don't even know the ip addresses of the devices, except the ER707. That is 192.168.0.1 and I can see that website if I connect to router direct.y with my laptop. The first page is to set up an admin account, but I have not yet done that because if the management should be done via controller. I can naturally be fine for some time by just using the router because connecting to it directly my connection is working. But I would like to play with the switch and controller, too.
So my very basic need currently is to:
- manage stuff using the controller's web interface
- be able to get ip addresses for all devices connected to switch
I can later setup different VLANs and rules etc, but I would like to get some guidance for this beginning. Thanks a lot for anyone who could help me out :)
