Model: OC200
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 5.18

I recently updated my OC200 hardware controller to Omada Controller version 5 and discovered that the built-in RADIUS server has been deprecated in this version 6. This poses a challenge for users like myself who rely on RADIUS portal authentication but find setting up and managing external RADIUS servers, such as FreeRADIUS, to be complex and not user-friendly.

My Network Setup:

  • Controller: TP-Link OC200 running Omada Controller v5.18

  • Access Points: Multiple TP-Link EAP series devices (20x EAP245)

  • Switches: TP-Link SG L2+ 48 port switches

  • Router: TP-Link ER7206

  • Authentication Method: Previously utilized the OC200's built-in RADIUS server for portal authentication

Concerns and Questions:

  1. Deprecation of Built-in RADIUS Server:

    • Is the removal of the built-in RADIUS server a permanent change in Omada Controller v6 for the OC200?

    • Are there any plans to reintroduce this feature in future updates, or should users seek alternative solutions?

  2. Alternative Solutions:

    • Given the complexity of setting up external RADIUS servers like FreeRADIUS, are there any user-friendly, integrated alternatives that can be used with the OC200 for RADIUS portal authentication?

    • Are there any third-party services or cloud-based RADIUS solutions that seamlessly integrate with the Omada ecosystem and are suitable for users with limited technical expertise?

  3. Impact on Existing Configurations:

    • Are there any recommended migration paths or tools provided by TP-Link to assist in transitioning to an external RADIUS solution?

Seeking Community Advice:

I am reaching out to the community to gather insights and recommendations on how to navigate this change. Specifically, I am interested in:

  • Experiences from other OC200 users who have transitioned to external RADIUS solutions.

  • Step-by-step guides or resources that simplify the setup of external RADIUS servers compatible with the OC200.

  • Suggestions for alternative authentication methods that maintain security and user management without the need for a RADIUS server since i use it for rate limiting and VLANS (so it needs to do these two importantly)

Any guidance, shared experiences, or resources would be greatly appreciated as I seek to maintain a secure and manageable network environment with the OC200 and Omada Controller v6.

>>>Yes, it's a permanent change and we don't have plan to reintroduce it in the future updates.

For your concern, the easiest way will be changing the OC200 to OC300/OC400, they kept this feature, after that, you can migrate the OC200 to the new OC300 or OC400.

Just a quick Question - is RADIOUS server going to be in the upcoming OC220 ? or is that also going to have it not available in future ?
