TL-WA7210N distance setting, does it really help?

As a new owner of the TL-WA7210N and having recently set it up, I'd like to know if the distance setting really makes a difference? I can set it up to 50+ km however, I only selected 1 and see no difference in performance?
The country setting made a big difference between UK at 8dbI output and US giving out 19dbi output, hence it is set to US and working great,
