Hi,

I'm attempting to connect two omada switches, extending a TL-SG2428P to a TL-SG2008P.

I can connect them directly over a 8 foot network cable. But when I try to connect them over a 100ft+ cat5e cable they do not connect. I can connect the TL-SG2428P to a EAP610 access point with the same 100ft+ cat5e cable with no problem.

I don't believe I need to do a crossover cable, because the 8 ft cable works without a crossover.

Are there restrictions to the length of cat5e that i can use as a trunk from switch to switch that don't apply in the switch to access point scenario?

Thanks for any help.

Paul

  @Lambons

Hey

In short, likely its the Cat5e.  I would be tempted to test this with a Fluke tester or some cat6 cable (full copper, not ACC)

Cable runs standards dictate that a run of cat5e (and cat6) should be a maximum of 100m meters before needing repeating.  However in reality this is closer to 80m for cat5e and perhaps 90m for cat6, so you should be in the spec..  from what you are saying my money is on the cable itself.

Likely the reason for the EAP working and not the switch connection, switches are fussy and will not accept anything but perfect connections, any sign of issues it will drop the link indicating an error.   EAPs are not that smart and wont care, you may just find it occasionally drops offline then reconnects.
