Model: FR365
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.11 Build 20250627 Rel.37685(4555)

Hi,

Having bought the FR365 wireless gateway, I expected to be able to use it as a wireless access point. When I set up a WLAN and only select EAP, that WLAN is not available to use on the FR365, as shown below:

The WLAN group shown above contains 5 different WLANs and yet none are available to the FR365 Gateway.

If I select EAP and Gateway, the functionality seems to be downgraded, if I am to understand the following error message correctly:

Why does assigning a WLAN to the gateway reduce functionality of that network? What's the point of having wireless radios built into the gateway if they don't offer the same level of service as the access points?

It seems as though I would have been better off saving money and buying the FR205?

Have I missed something here?

TIA.

  @Mr_Orange

FR365 is a gateway. So, configure the Gateway SSID.

In essence, it is different. I would not agree with the term that it is an AP.

If you have Festa AP, you can select both, so both platforms are using the same SSID config.

The products are targeted and equipped with different units and wireless plans.

And some features are proprietary to the AP. I don't think that's called a downgrade.

For example, you buy a low-profile race car and a home-use MPV; clearly, they are used for different purposes. You compare them in the same aspect of racing, where air dynamics, horsepower and braking performance vary so much. Then you hope they can do the same in racing or regular road, comfort, and air dynamics, whenever you switch to one of them. That's impossible, you know it.

Differences Between Router and Switch

Same thing for the AP. AP is similar to the Switch as both are layer 2 oriented.

@Clive_A - I realise that the FR365 is a gateway but it contains an access point.

If I want to use the wireless functionality of the gateway as part of a whole house wifi network, with the same SSID, the functionality of that network is compromised once it is assigned to the gateway.

There are various access points available in the Festa range with different wifi standards but they can be used in a mixed environment since, as you said, the WLAN is created before it knows what hardware it will be being broadcast from.

Your comparison is not really valid since the gateway contains a router and an access point. The access point should be compatible with other access points in the Festa range.

If you are looking for an all-in-one, you are on the wrong track. Consider the home products.

Festa follows the Omada product line and design.

It's like adding a WIFI card to a computer. You can host an OpenWRT on a router and use the WIFI card as the antenna, but it is not the same concept as a router and an AP.

You can dig in the parts of the hardware. There are tons of articles explaining this better than I can.

@Clive_A - I'm not looking for an all in one, since I chose Festa.

I have the gateway, 3 switches and 2 access points and I'll be buying another switch and possibly another 2 access points.

The point is the FR365 has an access point built into it, so it should be usable in conjunction with other Festa access points without compromise. The restrictions on having a WLAN assigned to the gateway are not known about, or publicised, prior to purchase.

Anyway, thank you for your replies. There is no point in us arguing (discussing :)) this any further here so I may well raise a support ticket.
