I'm trying to troubleshoot why my WAN download speed is so much slower when connected to the R600. Speed when connected directly to Spectrum modem = 200 mbps, speed when connected directly to R600 with no other connections = 50 mbps.

I've read that this is usally a NAT throughput issue, however the documentation says the R600 is capable of 680mbps.

Hardware Version = TL-R600VPN v4.0

Firmware Version = 4.0.3 Build 20180530 Rel.63202

All of the settings are default except for (1) DHCP pool.

Any ideas on what might be causing my speed loss would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You can use the software of Iperf to confirm the NAT throughput of TL-R600VPN.

I'm not very familiar with iperf but woudn't I need a "server" and a "client" to run the software on.

You need to connect a PC to the WAN port and connect another PC to the LAN port. And you need to setup the static IP address.

The PC connected to the WAN port should be as Iperf server, another PC should be as Iperf client.

About how to use Iperf, you can search the internet, for example, https://linhost.info/2010/02/iperf-on-windows/

Do not trust speedtest. Try to check with iperf or torrents, as it could use several threads.

Also NAT throughput depends on your WAN mode. As you used Spectrum modem, I can imagine it was in brigde mode and you still should use some kind of connection (PPPoE-connection). Now you still use Dynamic IP + start on PC this connection. If so, then it is wrong and you need to configure this connection on WAN-port and not start any connections on PC, otherwise  it will be PPPoE Pass-through.

My speed issue is somewhat similar or same. I to have Spectrum with 400mbps. My issue is the Speedtest will go up to 400 and then go down to 150 to 200mbps. I work for Spectrum as a Inhouse tech and the meters we use can do a speedtest. I connected it to the TL-R600 and it was only getting speed test of 100 or less. However I can connect one of our routers (AC1200 Netgear) and I have no problems getting the 400mbps. The reason why I originally bought the TLR600 was because my Asus Router was doing the same thing. Now I want to set up a FTP Server and I want to make sure I am getting my 400mbps first before I proceed to setting up a FTP server.

I dont understand most of what was said "Also NAT throughput depends on your WAN mode. My setup is by default. But I have NAT turned off. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please make sure your R600VPN is version 4, otherwise it cannot get the speed of 400Mbps. And check the port speed of your R600VPN. If it shows 100Mbps, you can try to change the cable or set the port speed to 1000M in Port Config menu.

The speed of your router hasn't problem, maybe you can try to test the speed through iperf.

https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/2408/

And when you use speedtest, please make sure your PC is connected to the router directly. Make sure that there isn't other devices affected the speed.

More than a year after, I'm having the same issue. I have two WANs with tho different ISP with speeds of 400Mbps each. Despite all my efforts, I can't get speeds higher than 50mbps on the PC connected directly to the router.

All the WANs are configured correctly. Bandwidth Control is disabled.

@Drano44 Make sure that flow control is enabled on all ports in the port configuration settings. This was what did it for me, I was getting 115 Mbps on my cable modem, but only 40 to 45 Mbps from a station using Speedtest.net. Enabling flow control took my WAN speed back up to 100 Mbps, so why that was not enabled by default is a mystery to me. I upgraded from a TL-R470+ to update to Gig ports, so my configuration really should not have changed. I hope this helps someone else who experiences slow WAN speeds with a TL-R600VPN router.
