Dear support

i installed TL-ER5120 load balancer with 2 Wan of 250 mb each. I got 500mb Speedtest through the wire (LAN)but if I connect through wireless (Eap 225 v3) 5GHZ I only got 200 mb

how can increase the WiFi bandwidth to become same as wired

thanks

@G07.ja

Hey

The EAP225 is has a max of 867mps on the 5GHZ band thats assumming a perfect scenario with no interference and point blank range, really you are never going to get type of speed in reality.    I have an EAP245 and iperf comes in around the 300 / 350mbps from a range of 6 meters through one stud wall, thats based on a 2x wireless card in the client (windows read connected 800).   As a very general finger in the air rule of thumb expect to get 30-40% of what the "wifi speed" says in the OS.   This isnt a vendor thing, its just the joys of wireless! :)

Some things you can try to improve the speed, sorry in random order as they pop into my head..

1. check the airspace is clear, use a channel that is not congested with other APs (neighbours usually), sometimes the 150 channels (DFS) are good options if supported

2. if you are running a controller, disable airtime fairness and force disconnect any ABGN Clients, stick to AC clients only.  Wifi Multimedia WMM enabled sometimes helps too!

3. make sure the AP is mounted on ceiling, will help with the signal

4. check the client card can support 2x AC or even better 3x.   If the device is reading in Windows as connected at 800ish then its a 2x or better

5. if the client can support it, gang the 2 and 5ghz together into one connection, this should give you 800 on the 5G, 300 on the 2.4G.  Combined 1100ish and real speeds I would speculate ~400mbps from iperf..

6.  expensive one this... but WiFi6 AP, this scenario is pretty much why WiFi 6 is being pushed.  The full support for MuMimo and OFDMA appears to increase the overall rates for wifi, though i have personally not tested this myself.

Best of luck and hope that helps somewhat

Phil

@G07.ja

Just to add to the last post, ran some iperf tests today from 1GB cabled desktop to the Laptop (WiFi windows reading 866mbps).  Results are below and pretty much what i expected, 330mbps so getting around 38% of what the "windows speed" says, this would be perfectly normal for a WiFi connection.

For comparision, running  1GB LAN to 1GB LAN  the rate averages 968mbps

Being totally honest, you will never get "wired" speeds via WiFi.   All you can really do is chuck more powerful APs (245/265/620) or newer standards (WiFi 6) and hope that it improves the performance.  However this will always be a case of diminishing returns, upgrading from AC1300 to AC1800 doesn't guarantee you will get 50% more bandwidth.

Hopefully that helps and welcome to the world of WiFi performance  :)
