Model: TL-R600VPN
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version: 4.0.4 Build 20200313 Rel.41831

We recently purchased the TL-R600VPN to use as a failover firewall and are having some trouble.

To cut right to the heart of the issue - the firewall seems to "forget" about WAN 2 when it isn't being used.

WAN1 and WAN2 work great.

As a test, we unplugged WAN1 and it failed over to WAN2

Plug WAN1 back in and it recovers back to WAN1

Then after some time if we check the System Status page, it wil show WAN1 as Link Up and WAN2 as Link Down.

Checking Online Detection, WAN2 shows Offline.

If we go to Network -> WAN -> WAN 2, we see Connection Status = Disconnected.

If we hit Connect, it will connect.

So the question is - why doesn't it stay connected?

This is how things are configured:

Network -> WAN -> WAN Mode

Set to 2

Network -> WAN -> WAN1

This is our Main ISP
Conection Type: Dynamic IP

Network -> WAN -> WAN2

This is our Backup ISP

Conection Type: Dynamic IP

Tranmission -> Load Balancing - Basic Settings

Enable Load Balancing is checked (enabled)

Tranmission -> Load Balancing -> Link Backup
Configured with 1 Rule.

Primary WAN: WAN1

Backup WAN: WAN2

Mode: Backup when any primary WAN fails

Status: Enabled

Tranmission -> Load Balancing -> Online Detection
ID 1 - WAN1 - Mode is currently set to Manual (we tried Auto with the same results)

Ping 8.8.8.8
DNS Lookup is set to the Primary ISP's Main DNS server.

ID 2 - WAN2 - Mode is currently set to Manual (we tried Auto with the same results)

Ping 8.8.8.8
DNS Lookup is set to the Backup ISP's Main DNS server.

That is how Link Backup function works. If your purpose is to have both WAN connections work at the same time, please disable Link Backup function and simply enable Load Balancing. For more details about Load Balancing feature, you may read this post.
