Hi guys,

Which one is better? Getting 3x eap620hd or 3x eap245.

i would like to use in home environment with equipped with smart devices. But 99% of them are wifi 5 devices.

do i really benefit the wifi6 eap620? It has only 4 spatial stream and 2x2 mu-mimo.

pro's of the eap245 is less expensive (but i am not sure if this can handle all the smart devices, and online gaming, streaming, facetime calls at the same time without any lagg or delays.

Hey

That answer is a bit of personal choice vs $$ if honest.

However I had the same thoughts myself a few months back and went with the 245s

Basically as you say I dont have WiFi6 devices and its unlikely to be any real change in that respect for 18months, at which time I can buy the WiFi6 model cheaper if needed.

In terms for 2x2 vs 3x3,  the 620 is the newer device so in a AX device it will be faster, no question.. however its likely not a selling point for you at the moment, the extra antenna is going to serve you better from a MU-MIMO point of view.

I decided to hold off until WiFi6E is here (likely 2022) as its 6Ghz freq and that's a major change in speed and technology.  The current WiFi6 stuff is a step in the right direction, but no real performance advantage to most people if honest.

Thanks! But the eap245 support only mu mimo on downlink right? Not like eap620 downlink and uplink mu-mimo. The eap620 has 4 spatial stream a S. How many does the eap245 has? I am in a dilemma. The price difference between eap620 and eap245 is only 40 euro per ap. So is it better to get this one? For heavy usage like gaming, streaming, videocalls at the same time?

Correct, EAP245 is the AC Wifi5 called model, meaning only having MU-MIMO for one direction and it is downlink. only starting with wifi6 you get uplink MIMO (but only for devices capable of it namely endpoints supporting two simultaneous stream or wifi-6 certified devices). Regarding streams: It has three-antenna when operating at 80 MHz resulting in max 1.30 Gbit/s for the 5 Ghz Band.

Here comes the overview:

Wi-Fi Standards: 802.11ac Wave 2, 802.11ac, 802.11a/b/g, 802.11n

Wi-Fi Spectral Bands: 2.4GHz, 5GHz

Peak Speed: 1.3 Gbps

Channel Utilization: 20/40/80 MHz

MIMO Configuration: 3x3 (3-stream)

@Seatleon8F Intel AX200 are cheap so if you are doing a lot of gaming/streaming it might be worth upgrading, especially if you are getting the AX APs.

WiFi 6 IMHO is the best thing to happen to Wifi standards (and about time), buy it, as its futureproof and the performance benefits when WiFi 6 devices come out are well worth $40

@Seatleon8F

I just got my EAP660 HD and tested it this evening. I already have an EAP225 v3 that I also ran the same tests with.

3 clients, one laptop with AX200 (ax), one latest iPhone (ax) and one Samsung S9 (ac) were used.

First I tested towards the internet, and all different scenarios 1-2-3 devices simultaneously were able to max out my 250/250 connection.

Then I setup an iperf3 server on a linux server wired with 1GE and tested with:

* Laptop running iperf3 with 4 parallel threads - this alone gave around 350Mbit/s

Then I combined the above iperf3 with the two mobile devices:

* iPhone running speedtest

* Samsung S9 running speedtest

All in all, these were giving me results of around 350Mbit/s no matter how I combined the devices. Using the laptop alone, I got around 350Mbit/s with iperf3, running on the laptop and phone all gave a total speed of 350Mbit/s. For example, on the iPhone and the S9 I got around 250Mbit/s shared across the two devices and the laptop pulled around 100Mbit/s via iperf3.

I also got the exact same results with the EAP225 v3.

So far, it's a big disappointment and the EAP660 HD is going back to the store. I'm sticking with my EAP225 v3.

@Tom_SE

I got 500 Mbits/sec (on Laptop wifi5 with 2x2 card) on EAP660HD
