We're looking at two areas which are conference type rooms and user count. Small areas where we're talking 4-12 connections are getting EAP 225 v3 units.

  • Conference Room #1 - 120 people capacity. Will 100% of users be using Wi-Fi simultaneously? Probably not. Wired for TWO AP's
  • Conference Room #2 - 80 people capacity. Same as above. Wired for ONE AP.

No reason to give end users more than 3Mbps -- basic web surfing, e-mail checking, a sufficient enough bandwidth for YouTube/Netflix/et al without it being too cruddy. Think cell phone, laptop, tablet video.

So using 20Mhz channels on 2.4ghz should be fine. And smaller channel widths on 5ghz.

We have an EAP 245 v3 which has not been assigned an area.

On one hand "just buy a couple 660's now for 120 person area" sounds tempting, but a penny saved is a penny earned if you're not being stingy cheap and flying on a wish and a dream. On the other hand, the EAP 265HD is based on the 245 and is a known good unit. Mature, has hit v3 (well, the 245 which is the basis of the 265. 265 is just a 245 with some software tweaks)

The newness and firmware level of the 660 gives me pause. I'm leaning towards two 265 HDs in the 120 area (so, they would each need to support 60 people in a mix of 2.4 and 5) then if there is an issue, maybe by then a 660 v2 will be out with a couple firmware updates and some time under it's belt.

Initial thought is:

  1. Take that 245 use it elsewhere (we have a small common area that may see 20-30 people)
  2. Get three 265 HD's one in 80 person room, two in 120 person room (hey, a 265 is only $30 more than a 245)
  3. Don't rush into 660's right now

Any input appreciated.

Though now that I think about it 120 people probably means 110 cell phones connected to WiFi right there. Notoriously bad cell phone service in that area. Zero bars for all.

And the 660 does have 8 spatial streamz (8 antennas, so I'm assuming)
