Region : UnitedStates

Model : TL-R600VPN

Hardware Version : V1

Firmware Version : TL-R600VPN_V1_130216

ISP : Cablevision

I just purchased the TL-R600VPN router to replace a D-Link DGL-4100 as I needed the gigabit WAN port for my 101/35 ISP. I noticed that after anywhere between 12-24 my downstream speeds drop down to around 60Mb/s and rebooting the TL-R600VPN restores the speed back to 101+ Mb/s. I have the latest firmware and even reflashed it to no avail.

I found this reply on Newegg.com from a TP-Link representative who suggested to someone else having the same problem that it is likely a router memory issue possibly related to firmware:

------------------------
We appreciate you taking time to try and review our product. We are sorry about the slow speeds that you are getting after 24 hours of up time. Usually the issue is in the firmware with the way it manages the memory. When you are using a bunch of network connections, your RAMM is being used. The RAMM should free its memory after a connection is closed. What you may be seeing is that the RAMM isn't actually freeing the memory and in fact slows down the system until it is reset. Doing a factor reset can help as was stated by our previous tech, and we even recommend re-flashing to the latest firmware which can be found at:
 http://www.tp-link.us/support/download/?model=TL-R600VPN&version=V1#tbl_j
------------------------

The link to the above Newegg.com thread is here: http://bit.ly/1b9VPJS

I emailed TP-Link support and it was initially suggested I simply return the router. I pressed for more info, pointing them to the Newegg.com thread about the same problem and was told it was NOT a memory issue, but was given no suggestion other than trying another router (my D-Link did not do this, but I couldn't get speeds faster than 94Mb/s downstream with the 100Mb WAN port).

Does anyone else having any thoughts? Is this a known problem with this router on 100Mb/s or faster connections?

Thanks,
Craig

I purchased a second TL-R600VPN router and replicated the same problem - after approximately 24hrs my downstream speed went from 115Mb/s to around 60Mb/s and rebooting the router resolved the problem and speeds returned to normal. The problem with these two routers, along with the same problem found in the NewEgg.com thread I linked to above, seem to suggested a problem with these routers. I haven't heard back from TP-Link on this matter. Do they monitor these forums?

I do not know whether the root cause is the mechanism for RAM of this unit, have you been always keeping high throughput when using this device?

Yes, for up to 24 hours, I am constantly getting 115Mb/s downstream - and then it drops down to around 60Mb/s. This is replicated with both TL-R600VPN routers (not replicated with a D-Link DGL-4100 - but due to its 100 Base-T WAN port, I can only get around 94Mb/s downstream - but no change after 24hrs, constant speed results).

I heard back from TP-Link, and they don't think it has anything to do with memory, so slightly confusing information coming out (they don't have any idea what is happening).

Thanks for any insight into this matter.

Hi, I have also consulted TP-LINK support and they feedback their R&D Dept. is focused on similar dropped problem and trying to reproduce, maybe some good news will come out.

TP-Link support has been friendly, but useless. There is obviously a problem with the firmware (particuarly, I am guessing, RAM/memory management). However, as not a lot of people have 100Mb/s connections, very few are reporting the problem. I will be returning my two TP-Link routers.

I have the exact same problem, although I am on 75Mb and I start loosing bandwidth after about 7 days.
So far I raised a ticket, but TP-Link keep trying to close it without acknowledging any of my recent replies.

Certainly its a firmware issue which needs to be fixed ASAP!

Im getting fed up with rebooting this unit.

Has this issue been fixed with the most recent firmware?

I've recently been upgraded by Comcast to 105/20 from 50/10, and have the same issue. Every day at some point my speed drops to the older, slower speed, and the only remedy is to reboot my TP R600VPN. I'm not even sure if the latest firmware is appropriate for my unit (V1), and cannot get a straight answer from customer service re that. The newer FW lists "Optimize performance of throughput," so I'd like to try it.

My hardware version R600VPN v1 00000000
Firmware 1.2.0 Build 130216 Rel.61471n

Latest firmware on line: TL-R600VPN_V1_130831, but says it's for "For TL-R600VPN( UN) V1." Anyone know the significance of the "UN"?

Thanks

UN stands for universal, means this software is not localized for specific regions. You can upgrade to TL-R600VPN_V1_130831

Thanks for the response. I did the firmware update and (knock on wood!) the speed has held up since, but it's not been that long. I will post again in a few days.
