thinking about replacing my trusty M9s with the newer X90s
just... is there a way to migrate settings so I won't have to start from scratch? :-/

You can do that, using Deco app. Steps:
Add new Deco X90s to your existent Deco mesh as new Satellite Deco units. Adding an additional unit to your TP-Link Deco network
Make one of these Deco X90 your Main Deco. How to switch your main Deco to another Deco currently on your mesh network
Delete all Deco M9s, one by one, from your Deco mesh. From the Dashboard in the Deco app, tap the Deco unit that you want to remove, and then tap the button in the top right corner. Click Remove.

@pl_svn ok, migration done: was easy and quick indeed 
all settings went through smoothly (IP reservations are the ones I was fearing about)
