Firmware Version: 4.0.4 Build 20200313 Rel.41831

I find that it has been over a couple of years since the firmware for the TL-R600VPN has been updated. I realize there is a newer model in this class, but, still.....

Will there ever be an update (security or feature) for this model or should I simply stop looking periodically?

Unfortunately, that product is classified as end-of-life in the U.S.. This means that unless the system is part of a security or bug patch there will not be further frimwares developed for it.
