Model: ER7212PC
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.1

Hello TP-Link,

I have recently bought a ER7212PC to be the main router for a small business.

As we have a set of remote people, I was hopping to be able to setup Wireguard in the Router but there are no option to choose Wireguard.

Wireguard is open-source, it has a smaller footprint than OpenVPN and when installed in mobile phones, does not drain the battery as OpenVPN does.

On top of that, speeds using Wireguard are much more interesting than using OpenVPN.

The model ER605 V2 seems to be a smaller and less powerful device and already has the Wireguard feature as stated in here: https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/3559/

Can we expect a Wireguard option for this router?

Hi @ABacao

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

In a short period of time, that might not be possible. Due to the hardware limit, and confirmed with the devs, this is the case.

If this feature is required, you may consider other solutions that support WireGuard VPN. Omada Cloud SDN > Routers

Hello Clive, thank you for the reply. The hardware specs from this unit are better than many so that reasoning is awkward. In the link you mentioned, there are no evidences on any routers that have Wireguard built in (so be careful about your replies). I believe that the ER605 only have it on a beta firmware. I would love to test a beta firmware with that option for the ER7212. If routers can use OpenVPN, they will most certainty be able to use Wireguard.

First, the information I got is that from the dev, we don't implement WireGuard to this model at this moment and it is not in the roadmap.

Second, refer to the datasheet or the firmware releases. WireGuard was originally not considered and we added them based on the market feedback. I will send an email to inform the web team to update the Specs page.

Third, there is no beta for ER7212PC to run WireGuard. I don't have and our beta database does not have it as well. Refer to the first point I have given.

If you need this feature now, you may consider other models as an alternative. Please return this model in time to avoid any unnecessary trouble.

Hi Clive,

Thank you for your detailed feedback.

Fortunately, the use of this router was not solely to use Wireguard but I bet everyone in the community would love to have it available and I truly believe it would be an asset for TP-Link having this available to end users. Having a router with 8 POE ports and being a Omada controller while being able to be a VPN server, was my need and 2/3 I got it exactly what I wanted.

Just look at the competition (Unify). They already have Wireguard as a possible VPN protocol in their cheapest router.

I do really hope the TP-Link team re-evaluate the Wireguard feature as it will be an asset.

Again, thank you Clive!

ER7212PC's performance is actually a little not ideal than other dedicated models even though its specs look great and it's 3-in-1. There is a great deal of performance left to the controller and it has an upper limit for its adopted device.

So if you prefer the performance, I would recommend you get a dedicated router instead of this one. Hope my clarification can help you make your pick wise.
