Model: EAP215-Bridge KIT
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.04

I've been playing with both the EAP211 and EAP215 kits for bridging - implementing a large-area camera system.

These devices seem to have great bridge connectivity, and the controller is getting there (I come from the Unifi realm).

I'm curious - can I set up multiple units to connect to a single unit?  Think of it as multiple telephone poles sending back to a single hut.  Is there a limit to the number of extra connections?

I thought I saw somewhere in the controller software somewhere today that 1/5 connections were used (while trying to pair of EAPs).  But I did not find a "bridge" section that indicated I change those specific settings.

Would I have to do it by setting up on pair in the default way, then access the 3rd unit directly, and manually connect it to the hut EAP, then do the same for the 4th, 5th, etc?

Hi  @jnewman

One KIT of EAP211 / EAP215-Bridge can auto pair with each other.

After connecting one EAP from KIT to the main Router, once the other EAP from the KIT is plugged in power, the 2 EAPs will automatically be paired and create a Mesh network after 2~3 minutes. During the pairing process, the 3 signal LEDs on 2 EAPs will be lit up.

To add more sub-units, you can log into the web->Management->Wireless Bridge Aps->click on “Add Sub-AP”, the main EAP will auto-scan the sub-EAPs around it and then auto add them to the mesh network, without requiring to put in the login password of the sub EAPs.

And only 4 Sub EAPs can be added at most.

  @jnewman67

What was the result? I just bought a EAP211 kit and discovered, after installing way up high, that they have stickers that say SUB and MAIN. I had them backwards. No where online did I see that they are designed that way. I couldn't even adopt the sub without swapping them.

If I buy more, can I turn a MAIN into a SUB? I want more subs. I want to have one main and 3-4 subs, but they're only available as main-sub pairs.

  @FarmNet

Haven't gotten there yet, did some initial field testing with the 211s, never got the 215s tested in the field (connection issues, maybe related to what you found - i hadnt seen that yet).  The 211s worked WAY better than expected, even with obstacles in the way and with them not pointed directly at each other (45 degrees plus).

Yes so far the 211 are looking great.  have one the new 650 desktoip AP's intenaly at the clent end for a holiday cottage.

Same question or where can I buy additional sub/client units?

going to post a little update on the EAP-215s

first, there aren't any firmware updates on the v1.0/v1.6 hardware, so i GUESS that's a good think a year later?

don't just plug all these into a temporary network and try to configure them as desired - they expect certain things to be in place when turned on to boot correctly.

First, your test network MUST have internet access - can't log into the EAP unit if it doesn't have it, it will complain the network isn't configured correctly.  THIS IS VERY ANNOYING and CONCERNING, as it may imply they are calling home for some reason.

Second, the v1 versions don't have any stickers that indicate MAIN or SUB - it's based on whether they can get a DHCP packet or not.  If you plug one in out of the box, and it gets an IP address, it assumes it's the MAIN because it's connected to a live network.  you MUST plug the SUB unit in to a POE injector or a switch that does NOT have access to a DHCP server (yet).  only then will it boot looking for a MAIN to connect to - otherwise it boots as a MAIN and CANNOT be converted to a SUB without rebooting it under the right conditions.

Third, the MAIN unit MUST be created with a wireless network - it doesn't have to be broadcasted, but it can be innitially then turned off if you'd like.  While this looks like you're setting up a WIFI network for anyone to use (and you might be, I haven't tested it for that), it's actually the network the SUB will be looking for to see if it can find a MAIN on.

so, connect the MAIN uint to a live network, reset it if necessary, let it boot and get an IP, log into it (I did all my configs using the built-in web access), create the wifi network, set a static IP if desired, THEN power up the SUB unit (without access to DHCP) and wait 3 minutes - it'll finally autoconnect to the main unit (as long as they're pointed to each other).  once it's listed as a connected SUB, you can access it (again via a web browser if desired), skip the creation of a network (no need on the SUBs), set the static IP if desired, and it's done.  Test that you're able to ping from computer to computer through the EAP units, and you should be set.  I set my WIFI network to hidden during the MAIN setup, and it all worked as expected.

I was working with 4 units (2 KITS), and when they were all pulled out of the boxes, plugged into POE injectors that were also connected to live networks, every one of them pulled an IP from the DHCP server, and everyone wanted to be configured as a MAIN and look for SUBs immediately during the initial configuration.  powering off three of them, disconnecting them from the network, powering them back on, and resetting them, only then could they all be found as SUBs and added to the SUB list on the MAIN unit.

in hindsight, I had ZERO problems configuring the EAP-211 KIT that i set up first, so I'm assuming I just happened to set it up this way, and it configured with little effort.  Wish I'd had the same luck with the 215s, but I'm happy with them now.  Going to implement one in the field next and see how that works out.

Quick followup after installation

with the previously configured EAP-215 units about 2000 ft apart with a clear, but narrow line of sight, I had zero issues getting them to sync and start working after they sat for about 3 minutes.

Using the TotoSoft LAN SpeedTest software, I got speeds between 150-300 Mbps in both directions.

Pretty happy with this simple installation, because the next installation will be WAY more complicated, and it appears I'll have very few issues getting that configuration working as well.

Thanks!
