Is there a way to force a device to connect to the network via wireless mesh vs. ethernet? Here's the situation:

Internet ---> Root AP ))))) wireless mesh link ))))) Remote AP  ---> ethernet switch ----> Local AP

The remote AP should be locked to the Root AP via mesh, as the signal quality is best. The Local AP connects via the local ethernet switch and then across the mesh connection. This connection provides the best throughput and stability.

However, occasionally the Local AP connects via mesh instead, with very poor signal quality and then the Remote AP connects via ethernet. This causes the throughput and stability to tank.

I can usually reboot the Local AP which forces the Remote AP to re-connect via mesh, but not always. Sometimes the Local AP has to be physically powered off for a while to permit the Remote AP to re-connect.

How can I lock the Remote AP to ONLY connect via wireless mesh to avoid this situation?

Thanks!

Hi  @dononeil

Here are two actions you can try:

1. Lower the 5G Tx power of the Root AP, this can shorten its wifi range so that the Local AP won't detect its wireless signal.

Config >Radios > Tx Power

2. Under the Mesh AP, set the Root AP as the Priority AP:

I already have the power level set to auto, I will try going to a fixed level. I'm concerned it will knock offline other AP's though, or limit the throughput if I lower the power. The reason this particular setup was chosen is because there is physically a building between. When the far AP connects, it connects at -72, whereas the middle AP connects at -52, a significant power difference.

Since these AP's are managed by the controller, there is no way to set the priority,, that feature hasn't been implemented yet in the latest release as far as I can tell.
