Hi

Don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but it seems to be such a strange (maybe n00b) question, there won't be an actual category for it ;)

Situation:

I have a switch, with multiple vlan's configured.

VLAN 20: internal lan network, trusted computers, these have access to all other vlans

VLAN60: IOT devices and also printers, these only have access to the internet and to other devices in the same VLAN

Now, when connecting all devices, I made a small mistake, by plugging a network printer, with an static VLAN60 IP, into a port on the switch that is configured as a VLAN20.

Now here's the strange part, at least for me: when I try to connect to the printer's internal webserver, I can't connect, I can't ping that IP address, but when I try to print something, that works!?!

When I found this mistake, I connected the printer to a correct VLAN60 port, now it still prints of course, but I can also reach the internal webserver of the printer.

Why dit it print, when it was clearly connected to the wrong VLAN port? Is the "printing protocol" something special? :)

Very curious about this!

Hi @Houseofdreams_,

When you mentioned the printer had a "static VLAN60 IP", did you access the printer configuration and save the ip address in the printer itself, or did you reserve that IP for the printer in the controller/dhcp?

  @D-C

In the printer itself, static IP

@Houseofdreams_

And the "VLAN20" port profile has Native Network as VLAN20, only one untagged member (VLAN20) and no tagged members?

If you set you computer's IP to a VLAN60 address and both computer and printer are plugged into VLAN20 ports, are you able to ping the printer and access it's UI?

  @D-C

Yes, untagged vlan20, pvid 20.

Second part I'm not able to test right away. Maybe tomorrow

Hi @Houseofdreams_

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

You cannot reach the printer web, that could be a result of the firewall on the printer.

Not sure about your whole network diagram but based on the given information, if it is pingable, at least it is a VLAN interface. This should work by default. No need to configure anything special to access the web.

Only possible cause to me, that is the firewall on the printer.
