Hardware Version: V2

Hi

So I've got four Omada 620 HD APs, one 24 port PoE switch and an Omada gateway (ER707-M2)

I can be in the same room, connected to the same AP on an android phone and get 120Mb/s easily with just 25ms of latency. It isn't merely due to connectivity to one particular server too but I've done speed tests on both, and both are just utterly poor. The AP is in the same room too, and the devices get 5 bars of signal strength

Though in the same room, an iPhone and Xbox can get download speeds of just 5-10Mb/s which makes it basically useless for online gaming

Does anyone know what I should do for my configuration on WiFi to help actually boost those speeds?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Hi  @an0nymous

The poor signal from the previous Mesh AP likely caused the issue with the slow phone speed.

As for the Xbox problem, you may check if there are any firmware updates available or contact Xbox support for help.

Hi  @an0nymous

Here are some suggestions:

**1. Check Device Hardware and Network Specifications
- **Verify Maximum Supported Speeds**:
  - **iPhone**: Check if the model supports the latest Wi-Fi standards (e.g., iPhone 11 and newer support Wi-Fi 6, while older models may only support 802.11ac/n).
  - **Xbox**: Confirm the model (e.g., Xbox Series X/S supports Wi-Fi 5/6, while older Xbox One may only support Wi-Fi 4/5).
  - Compare with the Android device to see if it supports higher specs (e.g., Wi-Fi 6).

- **Negotiated Speed Differences**:
  - On iPhone, go to **Settings > Wi-Fi**, tap the **ⓘ** next to the network, and check the actual negotiated speed (look for "Link Speed" or "TX/RX Rate").
  - On Xbox, check the connection speed in **Settings > Network > Advanced Settings**.

---

**2. Optimize AP (EAP620 HD) Configuration**
- **Frequency Band and Channel**:
  - Ensure iPhone/Xbox is connected to the **5GHz band** (2.4GHz typically caps below 100Mbps).
  - Use a Wi-Fi analyzer tool (e.g., *WiFi Analyzer*) to check for channel congestion and manually select a less crowded channel.

How to optimize wireless performance of EAP products

- **Channel Width**:
  - Set **5GHz bandwidth to 80MHz** (160MHz may cause compatibility issues).
  - Set **2.4GHz bandwidth to 20MHz** (to minimize interference).

---

**3. Troubleshoot Device-Specific Issues**
- **iPhone**:
  - Disable **"Private Wi-Fi Address"**: Go to Wi-Fi settings, tap **ⓘ** next to the SSID, and toggle this off (may affect routing optimization).
  - Reset network settings: **Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset Network Settings**.
  - Ensure iOS is updated to the latest version (fixes potential driver issues).

- **Xbox**:
  - Clear MAC address cache: **Settings > Network > Advanced Settings > Alternate MAC Address > Clear**.
  - Test with a wired connection (if speed improves, the issue is wireless-related).

---

**4. Eliminate Interference and Signal Issues**
- **Physical Distance**: Even in the same room, ensure no metal obstructions or electronic interference (e.g., microwaves, Bluetooth devices).
- **AP Firmware Update**: Upgrade EAP620 HD to the latest firmware.

Hi, I have:

iPhone 16
Xbox One S
Both support 802.11ac / WiFi 6

Unlikely as it affects multiple iPhones

- **Physical Distance**: Even in the same room, ensure no metal obstructions or electronic interference (e.g., microwaves, Bluetooth devices).
- **AP Firmware Update**: Upgrade EAP620 HD to the latest firmware.

Unlikely as it should affect my android device too

Hi  @an0nymous

Thanks for the reply.

I've set 2.4GHz to 20MHz, but the option to set bandwidth on 5GHz is greyed out?

>>Did you enable the Mesh feature? Is there an EAP linked wirelessly? Please share a screenshot of the controller's Devices page.

When testing the wireless speed, please make sure the following:

1. You are connecting to the 5G of the EAP;

2. There is no other high-traffic Internet activity.

3. Test with different speedtest tools.

Hi

Definitely 5Ghz

They're all wirelessly linked except for one, in mesh mode. It has to be this way because there's not yet any network ports for them to connect to

See attached. Note, I was using the desktop version to make changes to the network, NOT on my phone too

There's no other high traffic Internet connectivity and whilst I was testing, I tested on speed test websites. Even Amazon refuses to load on an iPhone sometimes due to poor WiFi

Hi  @an0nymous

Thanks for the info.

Please share a screenshot of the topology page to see how the mesh network is established.

Also, please let us know which EAP the iPhone is connecting to when testing the speed.

If you connect the iPhone to the wired EAP, what's the speed?

What's the distance between the EAP units?

  @Vincent-TP

See attached Topology

Both the iPhone, android phone and Xbox controller are connected to the EAP in the living room

The distance between them isn't that long at all tbh.

Attic > FIrst floor = 2-3 metres

First Floor > Living room = 4-5 metres

First floor > Utility room = 4-5 metres

Living room > Utility room = 4-5 metres

Attic is on second floor

First floor is on first floor

Utility room and Living room are on ground floor

I'll ask RE: to test for speeds btw. I've also checked WiFi analyser, and apart from one person who's inexplicably using channel 2 and 9 for WiFI on 2.4Ghz, everyone else is using 1,6, and 11

For 5GHz, it seems quite "separated" too but I couldn't be able to tell you the band width, especially as that's greyed out on the controller

Looking at the wired AP named "Attic AP" , it's not possible to select anything higher than 80Mhz too. Radio settings on all APs are all set to "Auto" it seems too.

Thanks

Hi  @an0nymous

Thanks for the detailed info.

The channel and channel width of a Mesh EAP will continuously sync with the wired AP, which is why these settings appear grayed out (non-editable).

The signal strength -82dBm for the living room AP is really poor, which is the cause of the low speed.

We should prioritize improving the Living room AP's signal strength. Significant wireless interferences and physical obstructions (e.g., thick walls, other wireless devices) are likely between the attic and the living room. Please either:

  1. Reposition the AP, or
  2. Reduce obstructions/interference in the area.

Also, did you test the speed when the iphones connecting to other EAPs? What's the result?

  @Vincent-TP

Thanks

I've repositioned it and it now says the signal is "good"  See attached. May I ask why it's also trying to connect to the Attic Ap instead of it's own uplink being say the First floor one? Surely that would actually be better? I'd rather it be like that as the distance is closer

I have asked the person with the iPhone to test but they haven't

So I've tested on the Xbox which is less than a metre away from the WiFi AP and the speeds are still showing as a tiny 2Mb/s to 5Mb/s on this 150Mb/s line that I've got here

>>>This is mostly because the living EAP detected the Attic AP and linked to it. You can manually select the other EAP as the uplink EAP:

As far as I know, many Xbox consoles display speed in MBps (Megabytes per second), unlike most mobile clients that use Mbps (Megabits per second).

1 MBps = 8 Mbps

Would you please share with us a screenshot of the speed test result of the Xbox?

  @Vincent-TP

Hi

Thanks. I ended up connecting it to the First Floor AP as the uplink and speeds improved to a whopping 15Mb/s (with upload speeds being about the same)

I didn't use Xbox's own software but rather speedtest.net

I grabbed the link from the speedtest on the Xbox and typed that link on my phone. It's getting barely any decent speed whilst my android phone in the same room and same area can get 100Mb/s with a 24ms ping

Thanks
