Hi everyone,

I’m currently planning to upgrade my Omada router from the ER605 to the more powerful ER8411, and I was wondering if there’s any official protocol or best practice for performing this kind of migration within an existing Omada-managed network.

Specifically, I’d like to know:

  • Is there a recommended migration procedure to move from the ER605 to the ER8411 without losing VLAN, DHCP, and static IP configurations?
  • Will the OC200 controller automatically detect and apply the old settings to the new router if I adopt the ER8411 in place of the ER605?
  • Do I need to manually reconfigure everything, or is there a backup/restore method for router-specific settings?

Additionally, I’d like to confirm whether the ER8411 supports Gateway ACLs (network-to-network rules) to block or allow traffic between VLANs, similar to what’s available on the ER605. This feature is critical for my setup since I use multiple VLANs (IoT, Guest, Media, etc.).

Any tips or insights from those who’ve done this migration would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

Thanks in advance!

Here's how I did it when I replaced my ER7206 for the ER8411 :

1- Make sure that the new gateway is in the same subnet as the current network

2- Make a backup of the site and configuration

3- Forget the current gateway (ER605 in your case)

4- Change the gateway model under Settings -> Wired & Wireless Networks -> Internet (You need to forget the gateway before so this option is available)

5- Select wich port(s) on ER8411 are going to be WAN ports

6- Select wich ports to copy from ER605 to ER8411

7- Adopt the ER8411 and enjoy !

Hope it's clear enough and helps smiley

Omada Controller : v5.15.24.17 Gateways : ER8411 V1.0, ER7206 v1.0 and ER605 V2.0 Switches : SG3428X v1.30 & TL-SG2008P v1.0 APs : EAP773 v1.0, EAP620HD v1.0 and EAP610 v3.0

You can check this post : https://community.tp-link.com/en/business/forum/topic/596292. It's old but still the same process for replacing gateways.

-  Is there a recommended migration procedure to move from the ER605 to the ER8411 without losing VLAN, DHCP, and static IP configurations? Not really, all your configuration will apply when you adopt the ER8411.

-  Will the OC200 controller automatically detect and apply the old settings to the new router if I adopt the ER8411 in place of the ER605? Yes.

-  Do I need to manually reconfigure everything, or is there a backup/restore method for router-specific settings? No but you should always make a backup in case something goes wrong.

@n0sh1t  thanks so much for this mate , very well explained, quick question to make sure I do the first step correctly .

should I connect the new 8411 to a lan port in the main switch , adopt it and then delete the old er605 ?  Am I right ?

You won't be able to adopt the ER8411 if the ER605 is still Online (adopted). You need to first forget the ER605 and then you will be able to adopt the ER84110. You will lose internet for some time but I don't think theres another way of doing it. You have to change the gateway model too in settings so it can adopt and apply your current configuration.

The first step is just to be sure that the ER8411 is in the same subnet as the controller (192.168.0.1 by default). If not then you can connect on the ER8411 with a computer or laptop via an RJ45 port and enter the standalone menu and change the IP address to the one you have on your network. I tried adopting a gateway with the default subnet (192.168.0.1) in a different subnet (10.0.0.1) but it always failed. Maybe it's just me doing something wrong.

Here's the message you will have if you try to adopt the new gateway without forgetting the old one :

@n0sh1t thanks again mate you're legend , I guess the new gateway comes with the  default network 192.168.0.1 set up ,  but I'll double check , remember i used the default when I seting up the er605.

One more thing , The controller oc200 is connected to the er605 , when I click " forget " the old gateway I'll lose connection to the controller no ?
Should I connect my laptop to the controller directly using an Ethernet cable ? .

cheers mate .
