Dear TP-Link Engineering Team,

I would like to request clarification regarding the current state of USB dongle support on Omada routers such as the ER605, ER8411 and ER7406. Over time, I have noticed several inconsistencies between the official compatibility list, regional communication, and the real-world behavior of USB failover. Because of this, it has become increasingly unclear what users can rely on.

  1. Some USB dongles that were previously listed as supported and worked properly during initial backup tests suddenly stop functioning months later, even though nothing has changed on the dongle itself. During that time, only the router firmware has changed. This raises questions about whether USB dongle support is actively maintained and validated after firmware updates, or whether the compatibility list contains outdated information.

  2. When a USB dongle that used to work no longer functions as a failover solution, there is no explanation available. Users do not know whether this is caused by a firmware change, a change in how the router handles the backup connection, or something else entirely. Without clarity, it is impossible to understand what has changed or how the previous working behavior can be restored.

  3. There are inconsistencies between the compatibility list and real-world results shared by TP-Link engineers and users. For example, in this community post about the ER7406, a USB modem is confirmed to work:
    https://community.tp-link.com/en/business/threads/topic/751258
However, this modem does not appear on the official compatibility list. At the same time, regional support in some countries states that certain USB modems are “not supported”, even though they appear as supported globally. This raises the question of whether USB modem support is meant to be global or region-specific, and why confirmed working cases are not reflected on the compatibility list.

  4. If USB failover suddenly stops working and the dongle has not changed, it is reasonable to assume that something on the router side has changed. However, there is no communication indicating whether firmware updates or system changes may influence USB backup behavior. Without this information, it becomes difficult for users to rely on USB failover for important backup connectivity.

  5. When the compatibility list indicates that certain dongles are supported, users expect these devices to be detected, to work as a backup connection, and to take over automatically during outages. When this does not happen, it is unclear where responsibility lies or what users are expected to do to resolve the issue.

  6. I would also like clarification on how the compatibility list itself is compiled and maintained. The list shows many countries, but several countries are not included at all. Other countries, such as Sweden, are listed, and we see community confirmation that certain modems work there. My question is: which countries provide the data that appears on this compatibility list, and how can users in countries that are not listed verify whether the information is correct or applicable to their region? In other words, what is the process behind updating this list, and how do we know that the information shown is complete and reliable?

For these reasons, I kindly request clearer communication from TP-Link regarding:

– How USB dongle compatibility is tested, verified and maintained
– Whether firmware updates may affect USB backup functionality
– Why confirmed working devices are not reflected on the compatibility list
– Whether USB modem support is intended to be global or region-specific
– How the compatibility list is created, which countries contribute to it, and how users can trust that the information is accurate
– What users can realistically expect from USB failover in terms of reliability

More transparency on these points would significantly help users who depend on USB backup for business continuity.

Thank you in advance for your clarification.

Hi  @Chris-21

Thank you for your detailed feedback regarding USB dongle support on Omada routers. We understand your concerns about the discrepancies between the official compatibility list and real-world usage, as well as the importance of USB failover reliability.

TP-Link is committed to optimizing product functionality and regularly releases firmware updates to enhance performance and security. Regarding USB dongle compatibility, our official list is maintained based on global testing results, though regional carrier or hardware variations may exist. If a previously working device stops functioning, we recommend checking the latest firmware release notes or contacting your local technical support team for further troubleshooting.

For the compatibility list update process, we consider both lab testing and user feedback, though there may be delays in information synchronization. Your suggestions have been forwarded to the relevant team for evaluation on how to improve transparency—including clarifying firmware impacts on USB functionality and refining regional compatibility labeling.

For further assistance, please feel free to submit a case via TP-Link Official Support for more efficient troubleshooting.
