Model: EAP660 HD
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.4.3 Build 20250714 Rel. 64055

I've recently installed a few EAP660-HD in our second office location and then I added a few EAP655-Wall in some meetings room where the EAP660-HD aren't broadcasting well enough. But I rapidly find out that we have some severe channel utilisation/saturation, so I hired a recommended wireless network expert consultant to troubleshoot our network. He came and did a site survey with a signal analyser and then recommended to create some custom settings profiles for all our EAP and get rid of the "AUTO" mode that isn't working properly.

While he has no issue creating some fine tuned profile for the EAP655-Wall, he was stunned to find out that the higher end EAP660-HD apparently doesn't support BAND2 and BAND3 channel ranges! While he's not used to work with SMB products such as TP-Link Omada and mosly work with Cisco and higher end products, he told me that he never see any modern EAP that doesn't support BAND2 and BAND3 like the EAP660-HD. And while they are DFS range, I know, since BAND1 and BAND4 are still very crowded in our area, it's far from being optimal to avoid using BAND2 and BAND3 on the EAP660-HD.

So, what's the deal here? Is there any way to unlock the BAND2 and BAND3 usage on the EAP660-HD? Maybe a different firmware? I am located and Canada and according to Omada software, all my EAP are up-to-date.

Hi @SimonC.,

It doesn't appear that the US model supports the DFS channels and I think Canada is more aligned to the US when it comes to the wifi regs.

Pure speculation on my part, but I think the use case for HD models would be to maximize compatabilty with the largest numbers of public devices so you wouldn't want to use DFS channels even if you could.

If you havn't, you may need to adjust the transmit power to minimize overlapping signals.  If you're using an Omada controller, you could try the WAN Optimizer (probably cheaper than the expert consultant.)

@D-C it's a good theory, but if that would be the case (a US/CAN limitation), the EAP655-Wall who's also US/CAN spec should not support DFS channels neither?

As the expert indicated, all channels are pretty crowded, that's why he set the EAP655-Wall on the DFS channels range. He also reduced the power to minimum, but it's something that is due to our location in a big city where all 5 Ghz channels are crowded.

@SimonC., I was specifically thinking the "HD" models might omit DFS channels as they seem to be intended to be used in public areas with a lot of users.  Is swapping the HD APs for a standard variant that supports DFS an option?  If you have a particually noisy wifi neighbor, you could try something like putting RF blocking paint on the adjoining walls too.
