Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 2.3.3

Good day.

I'm having issues with my ER605 and CityFibre 900Mbps symetrical connection. Speeds are lower compared to the ISP supplied router and speed tests fails pretty much every time.

Previously, I had 4G broadband provided by Three network and used a NR5103E in passthrough mode to the WAN. Had no issues with it, 2-300Mbps download throughput and speedtests ran flawlessly every time.

Recently had CityFibre 900Mbps symetrical installed and am experiencing issues with the connection. Speed tests fail constantly and the speeds are slow.

CityFibre have been out and inspected the fibre and there is very little loss/attenuation - it's pretty much perfect.

If I plug in the ISP supplied router, it's quick with no drop outs. Speed tests run more or less every time with over 900Mbps every test.

I'm 99.9% certain its the ER605. all local computers and laptops are hardwired through a switch with a single cable going from the switch to the ER605.

Plugging directly into the ER605, I get the described issues. If I unplug from the ER605 and straight into my laptop the issues go away.

If I unplug the rest of the network from the ER605, the issues remain.

I've turned off deep packet inspection, there's no QoS, policy routing, bandwidth limiting - it's pretty much stock settings really.

The only thing I can think of is that the ER605 can't handle the connection and I'm in need of an upgrade. I've searched the forums for similar issues and whilst not exactly the same, there seems to be a concensus that the ER605 can't handle gigabit wan connections?

Hi  @dazmatic

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

May I ask is this ER605 V2 newly installed or have been working for a while?

Can you describe your current network topology and provide us the speed screenshots when tested under ER605 and ISP provided router?

By the way, did you try to reset the router and check the speed again?

The ER605 has been working a while. The network looks a bit like this:

Fibre ONT ---> WAN/2 ER605 ---> TL-SG108PE

Currently however due to ISP checks it is:

Fibre ONT ---> Linksys ISP router ---> WAN/2 ER605 ---> TL-SG108PE

From the TL-SG108PE ---> 4 port POE switch ---> EAP653

                                      ---> EAP655

                                      ---> EAP650

                                      ---> TL-SG105E

However this issue is happening whether the ER605 is connected directly to the ONT or ISP router.

If I plug my laptop directly into the ISP router, it's fine. Even testing the cables, if I unplug the ethernet cable to the WAN port on the ER605 and plug that into my laptop, its fine.

Likewise, if I disconnect the rest of the downstream network i.e. disconnect the TL-SG108PE switch, the issue remains.

So it appears that the issue is solely with the ER605. I've reluctantly purchased a TP-Link ER707-M2 to replace the ER605 as gateway.

I'll try and get screenshots later.

Hi  @dazmatic

Thanks for your valued reply.

Please feel free to send us the related screenshots.

By the way, is ER707-M2 working properly at the same location in your network?

The ER707 is working perfectly fine in the same location as the ER605. It's just not possible to update it.

I also have this issue.  I bought the new ER605W to replace the ER605 as well but neither work.

The WAN connection works when plugged directly into my Deco Mesh network.

But not when plugged into WAN port of ER605 or ER605W.

Works on ER707-M2.

Also works when WAN port is plugged into another switch - but then it gets a private network WAN address
