I am wanting to check myself that I am not being overly critical

2 or 3 weeks ago I ordered an ER8411 via Amazon (UK) a 3rd party supplier, there was no mention that it would be new (old stock). I find this out as with no load on the router the CPU was 80% utilised and temp was => 50c, and from reading online I had seen the issue was addressed in newer hardware issues. This is when I found out that I had been sent ER8411 v1.0 which is believe is from 2019? Which is 3 or 4 versions behind current.  Anyway, I have sent it back and sorting out getting the money back.

This week I have then gone on to buy 2 x ER7412-M2 directly from a TP-Link partner and they have arrived, and they are both hardware version v1.20 (purple highlighter on pic). From looking and also checking via ChatGPT the latest hardware version is v1.60 and firmware version v1.6. Which once again would be 3 or 4 versions behind current. I have literally just gone back to them via email, to find out if it was a mistake.

Am I wrong, or missing something? If I am paying retail for these items, I am expecting the current hardware version or at a minimum within 1 release. What are your thoughts?

Thanks

What you mention is a big problem with Omada, in my opinion it is complete version chaos, you never know what you will get when you order something, I have myself experienced getting the same product that I want to exchange several times and have to send it back.

I hope Omada cleans this up this chaos in the futre. It is completely impossible to know what you are ordering as long as the product is not marked with version in the store you order from.

So NO, you are not overly critical,

@MR.S thanks for the reply, and I am glad to hear that I am not going crazy.

I have just had a reply from the TP-Link Partner (below), not exactly the reply that I had hoped for. I am surprised the TP-Link operate like this, if customers don't get the lastest hardware it will reflect badly on their products and negative feedback from customers They really need to step up their game, or they will lose clients to other vendors.

Thank you for your email.

Regarding the hardware versions, we do not version control our stock. The units you received are what we have received directly from TP-Link distribution.

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Best regards,

yes that's absolutely crazy, i have some routers with v1 and v2 hardware that i was thinking of upgrading but i haven't done it yet because i know i'll get the same router that i already have. it's actually so bad that we risk getting EOL products with the current system.

In most cases, it is possible to return the product, but it takes a lot of work and hassle to send products back and forth.

@anon_uk V1.6 is the same version as V1.0 in terms of features, so your ER7412-M2s should be fine. You can find more details about hardware versioning in our KB here.

With regards to hardware version, I'll check up the chain to see if this can be clarified by distributors, but that may take some time to see results. I understand how frustrating this can be, and I'll do everything I can to see if we can get that fixed.

@anon_uk it is confusing because of the slightly strange way TP-Link uses hardware versions.

While hardware v1 and v2 are actually different hard in some substantial way, minor versions only reflects which factory they are made in, or sometime like-for-like component swaps. So whether you get "v1.2" or "v1.6" may just depend which part of the world you are in, and so which factory it is shipped from. It doesn't been that "v1.6" is necessarily newer or better. But a "v2.x" would. I agree it is confusing!

https://community.tp-link.com/en/business/forum/topic/654228

"Our products may have different hardware version identifiers due to varying production locations. i.e. VX.0, VX.6, and VX.8 are manufactured in different factories.

For instance, a product with version V1.0 is functionally and performance-wise identical to versions V1.6 or V1.8. This rule also applies to more granular version numbers (e.g., V1.20 is equivalent to V1.26 or V1.28)."
