Hi everyone,

I’m trying to set up SMTP settings on my TP-Link device for email notifications, but I’m running into some issues. I’ve entered the SMTP server, port, username, and password, but the test email either fails or doesn’t send at all.

I’m not sure if the issue is related to authentication, port settings, or the email service I’m using. I’ve tried a couple of common email providers, but no luck so far.

I was also wondering if using a dedicated SMTP service like SMTPmart would make this more reliable compared to regular email providers.

Has anyone here successfully configured SMTP on a TP-Link router recently? If yes, could you please share the correct settings (server, port, SSL/TLS, etc.) that worked for you?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi  @kadenparker171

Thanks for posting here.

Did you work this out? If not, please share your config and screenshots of the error messages with us.

I use the Gmail SMTP server and it works fine. Do a Google search with the keywords gmail smtp server third party apps which will return the needed instructions.  The only caveat is that you need to generate and use a 16 character app password instead of your normal password.

This issue is usually caused by SMTP authentication or port/SSL mismatch on the TP-Link ER605W, especially since many routers don’t work smoothly with Gmail or Outlook due to security restrictions like OAuth and blocked “basic login.” A more reliable option in cases like this is using a dedicated SMTP server like SMTPmart, because it is designed for direct SMTP authentication and generally works better with devices like routers, firewalls, and notification systems. You just need the correct SMTP host, port (usually 587 or 465), and login details, and it tends to be more stable for sending alerts. In most setups, switching to a dedicated SMTP provider like SMTPmart fixes issues where standard email providers fail due to security blocks or limited device compatibility.
