TP-Link hardware versions (e.g., V1, V2, V3) represent physical revisions of a router model. While the model name stays the same, newer hardware versions typically feature upgraded internal chips, improved antennas, or different manufacturing materials to enhance performance, fix bugs, or reduce production costs newer hardware versions typically feature upgraded internal chips, improved antennas, or different manufacturing materials to enhance performance, fix bugs, or reduce production costs..
Here is what you need to know about the differences and why they matter:
  • Incompatible Firmware: Hardware versions are not interchangeable. Installing the firmware for a V2 router onto a V1 router will likely break the device. You must always download software specific to your exact version.
  • Feature Discrepancies: A newer version may support upgraded Wi-Fi standards, faster Ethernet ports, or different security protocols.
  • Minor Revisions: If your version has a decimal (e.g., V1.2 vs V1.8), this generally indicates the same hardware but from a different factory, and the firmware is usually interchangeable between these minor numbers.
