Model: EAP245
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: Latest

I just got a EAP245v3 today. I'm in LOVE with the guest/portal/limit features!

But having an issue with having the same SSID for the 2.4/5GHz network.. All devices seem to prefer the 2.4GHz band unless line of sight of the AP, and even then sometimes it wont switch. I've tried with both band steering enabled and disabled.

The issue is speed, It keeps prefering 2.4GHz for all devices that are 5GHz capable causing 200mbps speeds to be between 30-60mbps.

Its not a range issue as using older TP-Link models in AP mode I do NOT have this issue at all with the same names across the SSID's. I have several TP-Link AC routers that support AP mode and they all work perfectly with this setup, but yet this AP doesnt. :( I assume its a firmware issue of somesort but maybe I'm missing something?

Thanks!

@HPad

I had a test in our lab, my phones always connect to 5G frequency first. So I think it should be related to the client devices.

After enabling Band Steering, the clients will connect to 5G frequency first. But if the signal of 2.4G is very good, some clients will prefer to connect to 2.4G.

Please turn the Tx Power of 5G up to maximum so that the EAP will transfer the 5G signal to a farer place.

@forrest power for the 5GHz was set at maxium, But what sort of resolved it was setting the power to 2.4GHz lower.  Oddly enough this range on this seems to be slightly lower than the Touch P5 I was using before in AP mode in the exact same spot.  Not sure if its like this or theres something up with the unit that I have.

Will most likely still be keeping it due to all the features, but will have to invest adding more AP's/extenders.

Thanks for the response!

@GPB

Thanks for the suggestion, tried that still same issue. Sitting on my desk phone and laptop getting around 20-40mbps.  Turn off 2.4GHz and it jumps to over 300mbps..

I have noticed both 2.4 and 5ghz signal is lower on this unit than my previous router that was running in AP mode. I do have a EAP225v3 coming tommrow I will be testing as well.

@GPB I'm sort of hoping its a hardware issue, as I'm actually really liking it other than the range is sort of ehh. I like the simpleness of having a few AP's and management in one place.

Thought I'd provide an update, Still the same with the EAP225, but due to adding another AP I was able to make the EAP245 where 5Ghz & speed was most important in the same room. and VERY impressed now, kept 2.4GHz enabled on the 225 which is what most devices are connected to.  Even though coverage is not as great having two makes up for it.

I did find my S10e liked to switch better than my 11 Pro Max, but yesterday I noticed my S10e wanted to prefer a barely usable 2.4GHz off the AP downstairs over the AP it was sitting right next to. had to disable and reenable wifi to get it to move.
