Model: OC200
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Hi All,

I have an OC200 running two AP's (eap225 and a eap225 outdoor) pretty simple setup with 4 SSIDs one for staff and poss systems. and three for customers including 2 free ones and one paid. all of this is managed by portals assosiated with the corrosponding SSID.

I am trying to rate limit the two free SSID's but no matter what I enter into the rate limit option under the SSID sections, it has no effect on download or upload speed. even if I set the KBPS rate to 1 I can still download at over 100mbs  on the corrosponding SSID. any idea what I could be missing.

I did contact TP-link support about this direct but that was days ago with zero responce so hoping will have more luck here! has anyone come across this before?

@malcoski, works for me.

Test done using iperf with default TCP window size of 129 Kbyte running on a MacBook while wirelessly connected to an EAP225:

SSID rate limit 10 Kbps upload/download:

[ ID] Interval       Transfer     Bandwidth
[  3]  0.0-205.9 sec   256 KBytes  10.2 Kbits/sec

SSID rate limit 100 Kbps:

[ ID] Interval       Transfer     Bandwidth
[  3]  0.0-18.4 sec   256 KBytes   114 Kbits/sec

SSID rate limit 1,000 Kbps:

[ ID] Interval       Transfer     Bandwidth
[  3]  0.0-10.1 sec  1.50 MBytes  1.25 Mbits/sec

How do you perform the test? What firmware do you use? What is the test setup?

@malcoski

I can verify that the rate limiting is working for me with my EAP225 APs as well.  We'd need more details to help figure it out.  Screenshots of your settings might be a good idea.

@malcoski

We also have a test in our lab and the feature truly works without any problem.

In your network topology, we want to know are you using the IPv6? The Rate Limit feature will not take effect on the IPv6 address.

By the way, what's the version of the firmware of your OC200 and EAP225/EAP225-Outdoor? Please upgrade the firmware to the latest version, normally we will add some new features and fix some bugs in the new firmware.

If you are not using the IPv6 and your firmware are the latest, please tell us the topology of your network.

We are sorry that we didn't reply to you in time because of the different time zone. Normally we will answer the email in one or two days.

 I have checked in our system, and we truly received your feedback but it is about Deco M5 not EAP.

@malcoski

We can also check if the configuraiton has been issued to the EAP corectly. The follwoing is a test of mine.

After I enable Rate Limit for the SSID, then I login to the EAP via SSH, then input the command "cat /tmp/log/rec/ecs.rec",

We can see the configuration of the Rate Limit has been issued to the EAP.

Hi Thanks so much for your responce. my test setup is pretty simple just by using a speedtest service on a mobile phone. but also trying a doewnload of a file and still not in anyway delayed no matter how low the KBPS setting

thanks for the information, the other support request is for home model decos. this is a separate business enquiry (just using the same tp-link account) im not super technical but as far as I can tell we are not using IPv6 all firmware are at the latest versions. just rebooting everything to see if that works otherwise I will post screen shot of all I can. thanks so much for the help

Hi, just trying to login to the EAP directly but when I do I hit a warning telling me they are controlled by the Cloud controller and can not be accessed without first 'forgetting' them from the controller

@forrest

so rebooting everything did not seem to work.

here are some screenshots of the setup and the rate limit options for one of the SSID's let me know any other screenshots you would need to see.

Many thanks

@malcoski,

I guess that your smartphone probably wants to be super-smart by falling back to the cell phone network if the data rate over WiFi reaches a certain lower threshold. Next, web-based speed tests are not very reliable in my opinion.

Either disable mobile data or – even better – use a laptop to connect to the WLAN and use iperf for a professional speed test.

iperf is available for UNIX, Linux, MacOS, Android, iOS and even Windows here: https://iperf.fr/iperf-download.php
