Hello, I'm new to this community although I am an Electrical Engineer.

I recently started using CPE210's to link two building's networks together. I am using it in a bit of an unorthodox fashion, with both of the devices being inside in the respective buildings. So the obstacles are basically, two walls and about 100ft of outdoor air. I know this will very seriously attenuate the signal, but I'd assume that accounting for changes in humidity, the connection speed and quality should stay relatively the same. However, I will have some days where the connection speed is nearly 50Mb/s down, but others where the speed is less than 1Mb/s. It doesn't seem to correlate with the weather whatsoever, and the antennas haven't been moved since I set it up.

My CPE210's are set up with one as an Access Point, and the other as a Client.

My question is, does anyone have a similar experience/solution to this, or is this most likely just related to the...less than optimal setup?

Thanks in advance for any help!

@Moohcow, this is clearly related to the setup.

Directional links need a fresnel zone clearance of at least 40%, better 20% to work reliably.

Additionally, if the 2.4GHz band is overcrowded at your location, throughput will be limited, but this limit is most often constant.

@R1D2 Ah ok that's what I was thinking might be going on. (Not the Fresnel stuff though, ty for the article!) I guess we have the day we get around to running cable to mount them outside to look forward to, we just need to knock some holes in walls.

This will definitely improve the stability of the link. Depending on the environment (number of foreign APs around) it could help to use CPE510 (5 GHz) rather than CPE210 (2.4 GHz). But in rural areas CPE210 performs well, too.
