Model: TL-R600VPN
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version: 4.0.4 Build 20200313 Rel.41831

I came across an article about router security:

https://www.zdnet.com/article/home-router-warning-theyre-riddled-with-known-flaws-and-run-ancient-unpatched-linux/

  This article is discussing home routers and mentions TP-Link by name within the article. Even though the TL-R600VPN is listed as a business router (only this one is available?), I have to wonder if there could be any issues with this router when it comes to vulnerability from unauthorized access? Are there any steps to harden this router from factory settings?

  As for my configuration, remote management has not been enabled and the admin password has been changed. I prefer simple security over convenience - No auto update access and keep router as simple (KISS) and as strong as possible.

  Any reassurance would be appreciated.

@urbnsr

No worry about it. The business-class router including TL-R600VPN is not affected.

To protect against any possible malware, it's recommended to take the following steps:

1. Make sure you are running the latest firmware version on your router.

You can check if the firmware running on your device is the latest or not from this link.

2. Change the default admin username and password.

3. If the remote management feature is not necessary for you, please turn off Remote Management on the web interface.

As if remote management feature is configured improperly, it will enhance the possibility of attacks.

If you concern that your router might be attacked, you may try to restore factory default settings of your router first and then take steps above.

@Fae

Thank you for your reply, Fae. Glad to know this.

  Is there a way to be notified via email or some other way when a specific item's firmware has been updated? Maybe a user registers a device and when the firmware is updated, that would trigger a simple email to all registered users letting them know that they should find their way to the devices firmware download page?

@urbnsr

Hello,

Thanks a lot for your valued suggestions.

Currently, the business-class router including TL-R600VPN doesn't support to notify the firmware update via email (or some other way). I‘ve written it down and this will be forwarded to our developers for consideration. Before that, it's suggested to check for firmware updates on the TP-Link official website from time to time.

Thank you again for your feedback.
