Model: TL-R480T+
Hardware Version: V9
Firmware Version: 9.0.2 Build 20180926 Rel.34538

I have 3 WAN ports confgured WAN1, WAN3, WAN4 (Connection with WAN2 is another issue and for now it is unplugged)

WAN1 Upstream Bandwidth: 20000

Downstream Bandwidth: 60000

WAN3 Upstream Bandwidth: 380

Downstream Bandwidth: 3642

WAN4 Upstream Bandwidth: 700

Downstream Bandwidth: 6000

As you can see WAN1 bandwidth is higer than WAN3 and WAN4 for far.

Load balancing:

Enable Load Balancing (marked)

  • Enable Application Optimized Routing (marked)

  • Enable Bandwidth Based Balance Routing on port(s): (marked and selected WAN1, WAN2, WAN3, WAN4)

If instructions are right, data flow should must prefer WAN1 than WAN3 for aprox. 16:1 and for WAN4 10:1.

But the most of the flow is using WAN3 and WAN3 mostly!

example of Traffic Statistics:

Interface TX Rate (KB/s) RX Rate (KB/s) TX Packet Rate (Pkt/s) RX Packet Rate (Pkt/s) Total TX Bytes Total RX Bytes Total TX Packets Total RX Packets
LAN 960 36 717 427 5.7G 710.5M 5.3M 3.7M
WAN1 1 3 3 30 17.2M 96.2M 91345 766943
WAN2 --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
WAN3 16 377 176 278 304.0M 2.2G 1.6M 2.2M
WAN4 25 573 239 436 389.7M 3.4G 1.8M 3.3M

As you can see, WAN1 IS ALMOST UNUSED! so, my Internet service seems to be slow for all users for this reason.

Why this behavior?

Hi everybody.

It seems after firmware update, now Load balancing is working OK.

I share traffic statistics again:

Interface TX Rate (KB/s) RX Rate (KB/s) TX Packet Rate (Pkt/s) RX Packet Rate (Pkt/s) Total TX Bytes Total RX Bytes Total TX Packets Total RX Packets
LAN 230 11 199 80 729.4M 40.1M 625296 268243
WAN1 6 212 42 198 25.6M 589.2M 155566 535772
WAN2 --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
WAN3 3 3 10 9 6.7M 45.5M 38209 49800
WAN4 3 17 20 46 8.5M 90.5M 54823 108172

As you can see, now most of traffic is now using WAN1 (the fastest one) as expected. This problem apparently was fixed with the new firmware but in the sheet of fixes/news don't mention about this erratic behavior.

@Fae thanks for your help. Best regards!

@MarcoRV99

Hi,

To get the Load balance working, please check the points below.

1. The WAN port traffic ratio will be equal to the preset bandwidth ratio of each WAN port after the "Bandwidth Based Balance Routing" of the port is enabled.
Ensure the Upstream/Downstream Bandwidth is configured correctly, which should match the actual bandwidth provided by the ISP.

2. On the Load Balancing settings page, uncheck >>Enable Application Optimized Routing<<, and uncheck the port WAN2 for >>Enable Bandwidth Based Balance Routing on port(s):<<

3. Load Balance selects which WAN port is session-based. To test whether the Load Balancing works, you could refer to this guide to have a check.

BTW, there is a firmware update for the TL-R480T+ V9 router recently, you can check for the firmware from the official website.

Thank you @Fae .

All my bandwidth info is right as I wrote it, that's why my concern is about most data traffic is taking WAN3 and WAN4 being WAN1 bandwidth more than 10 times than others.

After posting the original message I saw the firmware upgrade download. I applied 10 minutes ago, so I'm going to do what you recomend and also see if I get a better performance with this new firmware.

One more question. If I change any setting from Load balancing (or any other), do I need to restart the router or changes take effect immediately?

Best regards!

@Fae by the way, If I uncheck "Enable Application Optimized Routing", I'm not going to have problems with secure sites like banks that always are checking for IP changing?

I know this setting is for avoid this behavior making connections to sites using always same WAN used on first connection attempt, so I'm not pretty sure to uncheck it, because I don't want bandwidth agregation at the expense of disconnections in secure sites.

Best regards.

@MarcoRV99

Hi,

Generally speaking, there is no need to reboot the router to make the settings take effect. But it's not bad to reboot the router once you change settings.

Yes, you are correct. Since your concern is resolved now, you can keep the "Enable Application Optimized Routing" option selected. Enjoy the internet with the router!

Thank you for all @Fae ,so, then now I can surely say that the fix came with the firmware update (despite of this "error" was not named on fixed issues list).

So, as I mention on my first post, I have another issue with WAN2, I'm going to plug it again and see if it works fine now with this new firmware.

Best regards
