I had the same debate myself quite recently and decided to just go with the EAP245, my thinking below

 

Pros..

The 245s are cheaper

245 supports MU-MIMO so two of them handle my 50 odd clients with ease! 

None of my current devices support  WiFi6

 

 

Against...

I have no actual need for WiFi6

More cost

The airspace on 2.4ghz is flooded near me so AX wont offer much more performance on that frequency

The speeds offered by WiFi6 arent much faster vs WiFi5 on standard 2x2 devices (most common cards) 1200mbps vs 866mbps, 3x3 and 4x4 cards are rare..

I dont have a 2.5gb switch to run the 660 LAN port at full speed and that would annoy the hell outta me   lol 

 

 

The decider..

WiFi 6E is starting to emerge and I want that untapped 6Ghz frequency with the much faster speeds!   I would rather stick with WiFi5 now and save some €€ to upgrade to WiFi6E when its here (looking like 2022)

 

 

Thank your for your reply! That’s my dilemma also. The price difference is almost none with the eap620hd. (Maybe 40 euro more expensive per ap) downside of upgrading to the eap620 or eap660 i need to get a poe+ switch to work with it. My questions is, one eap245 can handle 100 clients max right. So when i get 3 eap245 you can handle max 300? Or it stays 100 total? (I can blackhaul wire the system.) Secondly, do you have any problem with speed loss with your eap245? When having multiple clients like 4-6 clients at the same time; online gaming, netflix, streaming (speed loss, interruption, freeze?)

I have about 17 devices per AP and never had any complaints about traffic or transfer rates over the 245s, no freezing or streaming issues at all I'm glad to say.

 

In answer to your question, 100 is a lot.. not specifically for the AP but rather the airspace itself.   Say you have 3x APs on channels   36  40  44  then its a lot of traffic for that frequency (lower bands 36 to 48) so you should/will need to go into the DFS channels to avoid interference.     I would look for   36     52    104   as your channels to spread them wild apart and get the most airspace possible for traffic/capacity.

 

The AP itself is designed to take 80-100 devices, obviously not all watching 4k movies at the same time   and yes its per AP so 3x 245s = around 300 clients if airspace permits.

 

If you are going to be handling that volume of clients however, the 620HD may be worth the extra few $$ - the HD models are designed for higher capacity overall, could be money well spent in your case.

Still no Omada controlled WiFi 6E AP from tp-link =(
