Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.0

Hello!

Since I have 2 Internet Providers in my home, I want to configure "Link Backup" on my OC200/ER-605 setup.

I made the following settings on OC200.

Settings --> Wired Networks --> Internet

WAN = My main ISP

WAN/LAN1 = My secondary ISP

Online Detection Intervall: 1 Minute

Application optimized routing: Enable

Link Backup: Enable

Backup WAN: WAN/LAN1

Primary WAN: WAN

Backup Mode: Always Link Primary

Mode: Enable Backup Link when any primary WAN fails

I have now noticed the following behavior.

If I remove the cable from Primary WAN, the Backup WAN kicks in.

I am now assuming that in the event of a power outage or hardware damage the LINK BACKUP will work just fine.

However, the Backup WAN will not kick in if the Primary WAN has no data throughput (e.g. in case of an internet failure, like missing sync to ISP)

Why does "Link Backup" not work in the event of an internet failure?

It would be nonsense if ony the connection to my ISPs modem is checked, and everything that comes after is not of interest.

Can you explain to me, how the Online Detection on OC200/ER605 is working?

I hope someone can help.

Yours sincerely,

Patrick

Hi  @Patrick8277

You can go to Online Detection option and change the detection mode to manual, change it to Ping 8.8.8.8

For default mode, tplink router will try ping the gateway but if your Modem is a modem-router combined devices, it will still be available as gateway and reply pings from tplink router.

Hi  @Hank21,

Thanks for the tip. When I still operated the router as a standalone I was able to change detection mode.

Since I've been using the OC200 controller, I can't find this setting anymore.

Maybe I'm just blind and don't know where this setting is hidden. Any suggestions?

 Hi @Patrick8277

You can change the WAN DNS server to make it work.

Hi  @Hank21,

thanks a lot for your help. Very much appreciated.

So I have to change DNS server only for WAN port or for WAN & WAN/LAN1?

Do I have to set both, primary and secondary DNS?

Does it matter which DNS server I use?

I would have used Google DNS (8.8.8.8) or CloudFlare DNS (1.1.1.1)

Sincerely yours,

Patrick

Hi  @Patrick8277

Yes we need to change the DNS for both WAN to make Link Backup work properly for you.

There is no limitation on DNS servers you use. I agree 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 are good choice.
