Model: EAP225
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version:

I have two EAP225 set up at opposite ends of my house. They each broadcast a 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks (separate SSIDs for each band but matching SSIDs for each AP) with manually selected channels to avoid overlap. Both AP are adopted by an old laptop running the Omada SDN. The laptop now is typically off and I only turn it on when I need to manage the network. Both AP wire back to a Netgear R6700v3 router. The R6700v3 handles all DHCP/NAT for the network. The R6700v3 also broadcasts a 2.4ghz network (manually set channel to not overlap) for all of my IoT devices.

This network is set up in my house and primarily is used for work from home (zoom, emails, browsing). Streaming/gaming is all done wired.

Few questions:

1) would I benefit from having a dedicated TpLink router instead of using the R6700 to do this?

2) would I benefit from getting an OC200 and having it constantly on to manage the AP... Does it provide automated/on the fly AP management for improve performance (channel selection, broadcast strength, client handoff)?

Thanks.

Thanks. So based on that, for me at least, the only advantage would be fast roaming (assuming my clients support it).

Any feedback on the router situation? Is there a downside to using the R6700 as my router? ie... performance sacrifices or limited resources, especially if its also broadcasting its own wifi for my IoT devices?

I don't see any downside of using your R6700, you're actually benefiting your IoT 2.4 GHz network.

The benefit of using Omada solution (including TP-Link router and switch) when you have OC200 controller installed is:

" Centralized management for up to 100 Omada access points, switches, and routers ".

Thanks. I definitely would keep the IoT devices on the separate network to prevent any bogging of my EAPs. I was curious if having a separate router handling the traffic, would be better for performance... More specifically, could I possibly be over utilizing the R6700 by having it handle routing for all network devices and managing a 2.4ghz network for the IoT devices. Not sure if thats realistic; I have no idea how resource-hogging those processes are nor any idea how good the hardware is in the R6700 is for handling this.

It depends on the number of your network devices. Netgear states that their dual band Wi-Fi 5 routers can handle at least 50 wireless devices.

Usually if you notice that some device can't get connection (while normally it can) that may be a sign for over-utilizing the router.

I am sure that these answers can be found in the Netgear support community for your specific router model.
