Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version:

I recently bought some Omada gear to test some wireless devices with, an ER605, OC200, 2x EAP235-wall, and a TL-SG105PE (not Omada I now know). One of the things I need to test is Fast Roaming with 802.11r but I can't find a way to enable it through the Omada app.

This FAQ article is confusing me about whether it is supported or not: https://www.tp-link.com/ae/support/faq/2097/

> 802.11k/v/r take effect only when the wireless clients support 802.11k/v/r as well.

> Now we can enable/disable fast roaming via OC200

But then

> So far TP-Link EAPs with Seamless Roaming function support 802.11k/v Fast Roaming feature.

Am I missing something for 802.11r to be enabled or is it just not available?

  @MichaelJ459 The option to enable 802.11r is within the WiFi settings of the SSID in the web browser.  Don't think this setting is exposed within the Omada app.

Dear  @MichaelJ459

Thank you for your kindly feedback!

802.11r requires EAP firmware to support it. We are not able to just enable it on Controller.

Please wait for EAP firmware updating.

Thanks @adammiarka, @Hank21. It looks like this was just added a few days ago in v5.4.7 (https://community.tp-link.com/en/business/forum/topic/576478https://community.tp-link.com/en/business/forum/topic/576478). I've updated my controller and I see the option now. I enabled the option and tested it out but the client still won't do .11r roaming.

@Hank21 now that the controller supports it, is there an ETA on when the EAPs will get support in a firmware update?

Hi  @MichaelJ459

I don't have a time schedule can provide. But if there is any update, you will receive the notice via Omada Controller.

  @Hank21 I just set up two EAP650 (v1). Both are hardwired. I have been accessing setup through the IP address. I have devices that can utilize fast roaming, but I can't figure out where I can turn them on. Without it some handoffs between APs are frustrating. Thanks in advance. I don't plan on getting OC200 or utilize Omada controller for two AP.

Also how can I check if I have the most current firmware for the AP?

Thanks,

AD

  @AD0112

Hey and Welcome

This may not be the answer you are looking for sadly

To avail of roaming in any way between two APs you will require a controller to handle the handover, this is not possible with only APs.      Hank mentioned earlier a firmware for the APs, yes that to enable the feature on the AP, this will however still require a controller to work

For a successful roam a controller needs to know the entire topology of the network, namely all APs and where the client is in relation to them, it acts as a middle man to facilitate the handover between the APs.   As APs dont talk directly to eachother this is not possible without a controller

Unfortuately if you want roaming you will need to add a controller and allow it to manage the APs.

  @Philbert Thanks for the response. Quick question- where can I find the latest firmware for AP?

  @AD0112

No worries

The link below is for the UK but you can change the URL as needed.   Just choose your hardware version and good to go.
