SG108PE: Possible to use PoE splitter to power smart home bridge?
Hi,
I want to avoid installing another power adapter for a smart home bridge (to control the heating in my apartment) to reduce the mess. The bridge requires 100mbit LAN for data and micro-USB for power (5V/1A).
So I thought I use a PoE splitter and connect it to my SG108PE (in port 1-4). The PoE splitter was a noname device from amazon, admittedly, with LAN and micro-USB outputs. Connecting the bridge with both should work, I thought. However, while data comes through, power does not (after the bridge didnt power up, I connected it to the old USB power adapter, and it worked again). Weirdly enough, the status lights of the PoE splitter (similarly to thouse at the TP-Link switch ports) didnt light up either.
I'm now getting stuck troubleshooting the issue:
- The PoE splitter could be faulty / poor quality. Will return it to amazon probably. I can try again with a proper device such as your TL-POE10R, however then I need another adapter from that standard DC output to micro USB. Also available on Amazon. Doesnt feel like a solid setup though, does it? (PoE switch --> PoE splitter --> DC to micro-USB adapter --> smart home bridge).
- Or am I missing something so that this would have never worked? Some protocols incompatible or so (but since the bridge is anyways not PoE compatible as such and requires external power via micro USB, protocols shouldnt be an issue...?)
- Or did I somehow accidentially disable PoE in the SG108PE? I was unable to find any setting that turns PoE on/off
Thank you for your help!
